A Quiet Corner for Steaming Bowls in Kaimuki

Stepping into Pho NAM, you immediately trade the bright Honolulu sunshine for the comforting scent of star anise, charred ginger, and slow-simmered beef bones. This neighborhood spot in Kaimuki focuses on the essentials, stripping away unnecessary frills to serve bowls of pho that lean toward the traditional, aromatic style found in Southern Vietnam.

The Craft of the Broth

The kitchen here prioritizes clarity and depth in their signature beef broth. You will notice the rich, golden hue and the way the thinly sliced brisket curls slightly upon hitting the liquid. Whether you opt for the classic combination bowl filled with tendon and tripe or keep it simple with rare steak, the herbs provided are consistently crisp and generous. It is the kind of place where locals stop in for a quick, restorative lunch, often while the ceiling fans hum overhead.

Know Before You Go

Space is intimate, so do not be surprised if you end up sitting quite close to your neighbors during the peak lunch rush. The service is brisk and straightforward—perfect for those who know exactly how much hoisin and sriracha they need to hit that sweet-and-spicy balance. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle, so keep an eye out for small shared lots or street spots tucked away in the adjacent residential blocks. It is a no-nonsense, honest experience for anyone craving a genuine, piping-hot noodle soup without the fuss of downtown crowds.

Got the meatball pho for $17 and this was definitely not pho broth. It tasted a bit salty, and it came out kinda lukewarm as well. The meatballs also tasted like nothing. Do not recommend if you want pho.

Today I got to try the Spicy Lemon Grass Squid and it was very tasty. Also, the waitress was very friendly and helpful.

I don't usually rate a place 5 stars unless is exceptionally better than others of the same type. This place is clean and well ventilated. The Pho I ordered was amazingly good, with good amount of meat and noodles and the price is reasonable. The waitress was nice. Went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded.

Great tasting pho and spring rolls. Left full and satisfied. Not very busy on a Tuesday afternoon.

The pho broth was not great, it tasted like they added bouillon into it, which isn’t what you do in pho. The rest was fresh and tasty but I left a whole bowl of broth behind and that’s a crime.

We went about 20 min before closing, and the lady working there graciously welcomed us in with a nice smile. I got the vermicelli noodles with BBQ pork and spring rolls, which is my usual order at a Vietnamese restaurant if I'm not having pho. This one was really good, with decently thick cut pork with a lot of flavor. The only thing I'd change is to have more fish sauce included. Some of my noodles didn't get covered. My girlfriend got pho with rare steak, tendon, and added beef meat balls. The broth was different, with added shoyu. It tasted pretty good, but wasn't what she was expecting. The noodles were nice and chewy.

We went in during the lunch hours so it was pretty crowded. Very good broth and the rice noodles for the pho but you don’t get much chicken compared to other places. Spicy Squid with lemongrass was very good. Squid was very tender. It comes with salad which made the plate a bit healthier. I will go back to the lemongrass chicken cold rice noodle as it was very good in my last visit.
