A Slurp-Worthy Tradition in Honolulu's Chinatown

Tucked away amidst the bustling storefronts of Chinatown, Pho 97 serves as a no-frills sanctuary for those chasing the perfect bowl of broth in Honolulu. The air here carries the distinct, comforting scent of star anise, charred ginger, and slowly simmered beef bones—a fragrant promise of the authentic Vietnamese flavors waiting at your table.

The Broth That Defines the Shop

The culinary philosophy here is straightforward: prioritize the clarity and depth of the soup. The signature beef pho arrives with thin, tender ribbons of rare steak that poach gently in the steaming liquid, while the rice noodles maintain a satisfying chew. It is the kind of meal that demands your full attention, punctuated only by the crisp snap of fresh bean sprouts and the bite of Thai basil leaves.

Practical Realities for Local Diners

Expect a functional, high-energy environment where the clatter of ceramic bowls against stainless steel tables creates a rhythmic soundtrack. It is an ideal spot for a quick, restorative lunch or a casual weeknight dinner when you need something reliable and warming. Be mindful that parking in this part of town requires patience; scouting for a spot on the street or in nearby public lots is part of the local ritual. Whether you are a regular craving a classic brisket pho or a visitor looking to navigate the local food scene beyond the beach resorts, Pho 97 delivers a grounded, honest experience that hits exactly as it should.

Family restaurants are so special. This restaurant does not disappoint. The food is amazing and the menu selection is huge with lots of comfort food favorites. You can tell a lot of love goes into their dishes and serving their customers. They are open everyday, morning to night. Great location in the middle of Chinatown. I definitely recommend this gem! I'll be returning. I can't wait to share it with others! Thank you to the Pho 97 Family!

This has been our go to for great Vietnamese food! We have tried different kinds of pho, rice plates, and appetizers! Their is very tasty and another reason we like going here is it’s very clean! The smell of pho isn’t that strong like other Vietnamese restaurants! My son in law is Vietnamese and also enjoys coming here whenever they’re visiting.

Had a wonderful meal here! This is a family-run restaurant, and you can tell that quality food and genuine hospitality really matter to them. I ordered the oxtail pho, and the meat was incredibly tender while the broth was rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The fresh herbs were beautiful. Seeing culantro included was such a treat, and the bean sprouts were crisp and fresh. I also tried the Vietnamese iced coffee (strong, sweet, and delicious) and their banana tapioca dessert, which was perfectly balanced, not overly sweet. The restaurant has a charming historic feel that fits perfectly with its Chinatown location. The staff were friendly and welcoming from the moment I walked in. I’ll definitely be back!

Our family of four visited this restaurant in May 2026. We each ordered a different Vietnamese dish: pho, Hue rice noodle soup (bún bò Huế), etc. I especially enjoyed mine very much: Vermicelli with grilled pork and spring rolls. The foods were very authentic Vietnamese - very flavourful and delicious. And the portions are very generous with plenty of fresh vegetables. We are planning to come back to dine there again and we highly recommend Pho 97.

In the heart of Chinatown. Mom and Pop Vietnamese restaurant. Dont expect anything fancy here with about 10 tables. The food is the star here. Home style, authentic Vietnamese dishes. I tried the Pho. The broth is clear, but full beefy flavor. The spices is not overpowering at all. Generous portions of meats. The rice noodles are cooked perfectly. Herbs and vegetables are fresh. The price is good for the amount of food you get. The service was average though. But I didn't need much, but my food came out fast and piping hot. But she never came and checked and refill my water. My experience was great and will go again. Only Four STARS for now until I try more dishes.

A gem that deserves higher ratings! Pretty empty at 7:30pm on a Monday which was a little sus but every dish was great and our party of 5 finished all our plates—two grilled pork chops, a vermicelli bowl, and a pho (one person shared). Small thing but the tap water was also good! Big roomy tables (many can seat 6, instead of squeezing around a four-seater) and the facilities are clean. Would definitely come back.

Located in Chinatown. Super friendly owners and staff. Very welcoming to our family and kids. The spring rolls came with veggies to wrap and dip with fish sauce. Combo pho had a nice mix of tendon, tripe, brisket, Sliced beef and meatballs. Viet coffee came ready to drink in a cup. The offer fresh soymilk too!
