A Modern Take on Filipino Classics in Chinatown

Step off the bustling streets of Honolulu’s Chinatown and into the vibrant, neon-lit energy of Peso. This isn't your traditional Sunday brunch spot; it is a high-octane celebration of Filipino heritage reimagined for the modern palate. The space buzzes with a youthful, urban intensity, making it an ideal hangout for those who appreciate loud beats, craft cocktails, and food that doesn't hold back on bold, punchy aromatics.

Sizzling Skillets and Sharp Flavors

Chef Gary Sanico channels his roots into a menu that is equal parts nostalgic and experimental. The kitchen masters the art of the sizzle, with signature plates like the pork belly sisig arriving at your table crackling and steaming. Expect a sharp, vinegar-forward brightness that cuts through the rich fats of the pork, a hallmark of authentic Filipino flavor profiles. It is the kind of food that demands a cold drink, and the bar program delivers with island-inspired mixes that lean into tropical fruit notes and spice.

The Chinatown Dynamic

The atmosphere is raw and unpretentious, designed for groups who want to share small plates over rounds of drinks. While the interior can get quite loud during peak hours—an inevitable byproduct of the energetic, packed-in layout—it adds to the collective excitement of the room. It’s a place to be seen rather than a spot for an intimate whisper-quiet conversation. Keep in mind that finding parking in this dense corner of the city requires a bit of patience, so consider arriving early or opting for a ride-share to fully enjoy the evening without the stress of navigating the nearby blocks.

I stopped by Ala Moana Poi Bowl the other day and it was exactly what I was looking for. It is located right in the food court and features that classic turo-turo style where you just point at what you want from the display. The service was incredibly fast, which I really appreciated. The workers were nice, though you could tell they were in a bit of a rush to keep things moving. They were a little short with me when I was ordering, but it was totally understandable given how long the line was and how hard they were working to get everyone through quickly. The portions were really generous for the price. I felt like I got a lot of food, and more importantly, the flavors were really good. It definitely hit the spot for a solid local meal. One of the things I liked most about eating here is that I felt happy to support a local business. The food court at the mall seems to be filling up more and more with large chains from the mainland, so it is nice to have a reliable place that still serves local food. Everything I tried tasted fresh and well-seasoned. It is a great option if you are shopping and want something filling and authentic without having to sit down at a full-service restaurant. Even with the fast pace and the bustling environment, the quality of the food stands up. It is a relief to find a spot that still feels authentic in such a corporate environment. I’ll keep coming back here to make sure we keep these local options around.

This trip to Oahu was my chance to tackle the food courts at AMC as it was an extended, non-vacay stay. ATMOSPHERE: Located inside the bustling Makai Market food court, they share indoor communal seating with close to 30 other eateries. MENU: Hawaiian and local Hawaii fare served on a hot foods line. FOOD: 3 Choice Combo I chose chicken adobo, chicken long rice, BBQ chicken, and mac salad. Both chicken dishes were made with four bone-in thighs, with the adobo version being my favorite. The BBQ one tasted more like shoyu chicken and was pretty dry. The chicken long rice was okay as it wasn’t very gingery nor loaded with chicken. The mac salad was good. Huge portions! SERVICE: Counter service was friendly and quick. OVERALL: Not bad. I may try the Hawaiian dishes another time.
