A Slice of Kalihi Culinary History

Stepping into Palace Saimin feels like hitting the pause button on Honolulu’s rapid pace. This local institution in the heart of Kalihi has been serving up bowls of tradition long before the modern food scene took over. The atmosphere is unpretentious and stripped-back; you are here for the noodles, not the decor. Expect formica tabletops, the steady hum of a ceiling fan, and the occasional clatter of spoons against ceramic bowls.

The Art of the Broth

The signature draw here is undoubtedly the saimin, an iconic Hawaiian comfort food. The broth is legendary—clear, deeply savory, and prepared with a subtle complexity that keeps regulars coming back for decades. The noodles possess that distinct springiness that only authentic, handmade-style preparation can achieve. Pair your bowl with a side of their famous barbecue sticks; the smoky, charred exterior provides the perfect textural contrast to the soft, slurpy noodles. It is a simple meal, but executed with a consistency that is increasingly rare.

Know Before You Go

While the flavors are top-tier, bring a bit of patience. This is a small, family-run operation where things move at a steady, island-time pace. The parking area can get quite tight during the lunch rush, so if you’re driving through the Kalihi district, be prepared to navigate the lot carefully. It isn’t a spot for a quiet, intimate dinner, but rather a place to rub elbows with neighborhood locals, construction crews, and long-time fans who understand that a good bowl of soup is worth the wait. It is a genuine piece of Honolulu food culture that remains refreshingly committed to its roots.

I really enjoyed the food. The menu is small and simple but the food is very refreshing and delicious. The barbecue sticks were the star of the show. Super smokey and overall 10/10 flavor.

Had a chance to step back in time and visit Palace Saimin. It's a cute little old school restaurant serving up hearty bowls of Saimin. I opted for Wonmin which had about 6 very delicious wontons plus good quality noodles laced with little bits of chopped barbecue pork and chopped scallions in semi clear dashi broth. The beef sticks are amazing! I went with two, I probably could have ate six! Service was friendly and polite and the prices are extremely reasonable.

I ordered the wonton udon extra large for $11.25 with a barbeque stick for $4 and I was so full after barely finishing. The soup was so good to the last drop and the udon was so chewy and tasty. The barbeque stick was a real solid beef steak with a very nice terry sauce, just perfect. The price is really cheap and the service very friendly. This is definitely a gem even after 79 years.

Found this place last minute when I was around the area. I'm so glad I did! Hole in the wall, local gem, mom and pop shop. The food was so delicious! I got the Wongton min, that one comes with noodles. The wonton soup just comes with wonton only FYI. I also got a bbq beef stick. The day I went, it was really hot, humid I was craving for something cool but stumbled on this place cuz I was craving noodles. The broth was so good and really just soothed my soul. Everything was amazing and I wish I got the larger bowl. The follow day I took my friend and she said this was the best wonton soup she had in a very long time (since her mom passed). We both really enjoyed this place and recommend, will be going again next time we visit Oahu! This place is small and parking is limited but ppl don't stay long. The ppl who work are really nice and this place is always busy so be patient if they don't sit you right away, even if a table is open. They got you, they know what they are going if they have been in business for 79 years! 😬

Absolutely delicious. The saimin, the wonton min and the saidon were all good. The saidon is saimin with saimin noodles and udon noodles mixed together. The barbecue sticks are very good as well. Some things to note: no AC, so, if you need AC, you may be uncomfortable. Also, I think they soup stock includes dried fish or other dried seafood. The smell is very strong, so some who dislike that may want to avoid the place. We all loved it.
