A Morning Ritual in Kaimuki

Walking into this corner of Honolulu feels like stepping into a time capsule dedicated to the art of the griddle. Located in the heart of the Kaimuki neighborhood, the Original Pancake House keeps the tradition of scratch-made breakfast alive with a focus on patience—you will likely be waiting for a table on a Saturday morning, but the smell of sizzling butter and coffee makes the sidewalk shuffle worth it.

Sourdough and Oven-Baked Perfection

The menu here is defined by classic American comfort food. The signature Dutch Baby is a sight to behold; it arrives at the table puffed high, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with a side of lemon and whipped butter that melts instantly upon contact. For those who prefer a savory kick, the 49er Flapjacks are remarkably thin and chewy, served in a stack that tests even the most dedicated breakfast enthusiast. Everything is prepared using a signature sourdough starter that has been maintained for decades, providing a subtle tang that mass-market chains simply cannot replicate.

The Kaimuki Atmosphere

The interior is utilitarian and unpretentious, with booths that have seen thousands of sunrise meals. It is loud, busy, and efficiently run by a staff that has seen every possible breakfast order combination. You won’t find minimalist decor or Instagram-friendly backdrops here. Instead, expect the sound of clinking silverware, the constant pouring of house-blend coffee, and a steady stream of local regulars who have made this a weekend staple. Parking in Kaimuki can be a bit of a localized sport, so arrive early or be prepared to navigate the nearby residential side streets.

The food was good but a little pricey, and overall it felt overhyped. The service was terrible, after I paid in cash, the servers didn’t communicate with each other and later questioned me again about the check and payment, which was very frustrating. The place is old, and the men’s restroom was gross and disgusting. Because of this experience, I won’t be coming back.

Local breakfast diner. Consistently good. Even when there's a wait, they do a good job of moving it along. They don't have too many large tables so understand there's going to be a wait if you have a huge group. Service and food are always good.

Staff always smiling, warm and welcoming, and the food is awesome. I had coffee, buttermilk pancakes, and a Portuguese sausage, mushroom, spinach with cheese omelette. Absolutely amazing.

Pancakes are ono. I normally get the corned beef hash cuz get bit of crispy and it's not canned. Hubs likes the eggs and bacon. Sometimes there's a bit of wait but it's worth it. It's not a classy restaurant but has good food. Service is Aunty style, dey be on it.

Worst experience ever. It smelled nasty as soon as we walked in. Like stale oil. The food came out fairly quickly. I ordered spam and eggs with rice. Eggs and rice were good. The spam was extremely undercooked. My MIL ordered eggs, hashbrowns and Portuguese sausage. The hashbrowns were hash brown patties (would be nice if it was posted on the menu that they’re patties) but what made it disgusting was the taste of old oil that the hashbrown patties had. It was clearly fried in old oil that needed to be changed. And not just day old oil. It must’ve been a few days old. Completely disgusting. As we were eating, a cockroach walked by. We understand nature is nature so we laughed about it. The kicker was when MIL and I walked to the restroom to pee before leaving. The smell was sooo disgusting like sewage that our breakfast nearly came up. We immediately walked out without using the restroom, but it was so strong that we had to take zofran to alleviate the nausea. Overall. I’d rate this place a 0 if I could. The service and the coffee was good but I wanted breakfast not a coffee trip. Never again. How these other reviews are good. I’ll never know. I was literally stumped by that.

Whenever we’re on Oahu, the Original Pancake House at 1414 Dillingham Blvd in Honolulu is a must-stop for us. Tucked away in the Kalihi-Palama area, this spot is a bit off the beaten path from the tourist-heavy zones like Waikiki, but it’s well worth the trip. It’s about a 10-minute drive from downtown Honolulu, making it a convenient breakfast haven for locals and visitors alike. On our latest visit, we dove into a feast that never disappoints. The Spam & Eggs was a perfect blend of local flair and comfort—crisp Spam paired with flawlessly cooked eggs and a side of fluffy pancakes that practically melted with every bite. The Eggs and Bacon were spot-on, with the bacon crispy and the eggs cooked just how we like them. The Blueberry Pancakes, though, stole the show—loaded with fresh, juicy blueberries and made with real butter, they were light, fluffy, and pure bliss. The coffee was fresh and bold, tying it all together beautifully. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and that generous use of butter made every dish feel indulgent yet homey. It’s no surprise we keep coming back to this Dillingham location—it’s a reliable hit every time we’re on the island. If you’re craving a breakfast that’s both satisfying and full of flavor, this Original Pancake House is the place to go. Just note: the Ala Moana location has closed, so head to Dillingham for your fix!

It's morning. How does a Denver Omelette, with a three stack of pancakes, paired with fresh sizzling hot black coffee sound to YOU? This definitely is my favorite pancake house on Oahu. Their service with a smile, efficient order taking and delivery of delicious menu items is second to none. Please test my claim.

This place is one of our favorites! Classic diner with amazing food. I highly recommend the omelettes they are HUGE and delicious. Also if you are lucky you can order a special apple pancake that is baked in the oven. I got to order it today and it is by far the best pancake I have ever had. I smothered it in butter and got whipped cream on the side and regret nothing. You haven’t really had a pancake until you’ve tasted this.

Old school breakfast restaurant. My first visit. It like walking back in time. Old fashioned set up. I ordered 2 eggs and sausage with pancakes. Eggs were small in size but came out cooked to order and hot as was the sausage. Both tasted great. The pancakes were good, sort of flat. They were all out of their famous apple pancakes. I would definitely go again
