A Local Legend for Poke Lovers in Kapahulu

If you find yourself navigating the streets of Kapahulu, you will likely spot a modest storefront with a consistent line snaking toward the door. This is Ono Seafood, a culinary landmark that prioritizes quality poke over flashy decor. There are no tables to linger at here; this is a true grab-and-go operation where the focus is entirely on the freshness of the catch.

The Gold Standard for Marinated Ahi

Stepping inside, the air carries the faint, clean scent of sea salt and toasted sesame oil. The menu is refreshingly brief, highlighting their famous Shoyu Ahi and Spicy Ahi. Chef-driven consistency is the secret behind their longevity—the fish is diced into generous, meaty chunks and tossed in marinades that walk the perfect line between savory and bright. Watching the staff portion out the scoops feels like witnessing a well-rehearsed rhythm; they move fast, which is essential given the popularity of this neighborhood staple.

What to Expect on Your Visit

The space is functional and efficient, often buzzing with the chatter of locals waiting for their lunch plates. A minor quirk for visitors to keep in mind is the limited parking situation; you might need to circle the block a few times or park slightly further down the street before you get your hands on a container of their signature poke. It is best enjoyed immediately—take your plastic container to a nearby beach park, crack open a cold drink, and experience why this Honolulu institution has maintained a cult following for decades.

This was the freshest poke I've ever had and the folks there are so kind and welcoming. I've read so many reviews about this place and took their advice with getting the tempura flakes. We got the ahi tuna and the special of the day which was a spicy salmon. It was delicious but the portion is smaller and pricier than other poke places around the island but I still recommend it. Just note before going that there's not a lot of spots to eat in front and parking is limited.

This is some of the best poke I’ve ever had. Super fresh and flavorful, staff was friendly and let us sit outside for a bit while they were closing up. Easily walkable from Waikiki or reachable by bus. Would definitely recommend.

This poke bowl place was recommended by our Uber driver. He said it’s a spot locals often come to eat. After we got here, we found the food was really good, and it’s actually been around for a long time. Definitely a great place.

One of the better poke bowls you'll have in Waikiki. Fish was fresh and flavors popped in your mouth. Loved the spicy ahi tuna. Actually had a little spice. The portion is a little small for what you pay. With so many poke in the area, its worth a try but the value is just not there.

Best poke I’ve ever had in my life! I got the Spicy Ahi with all the toppings. There’s only two parking spots, so recommend Uber or walking. Very tasty!

I’ve been here every time I visit Oahu, and it’s the poke place we always come back for. The location is great, and parking is fairly easy, which already makes it a smooth stop during a trip. Their fish quality is just different. It’s so fresh, and the texture is honestly crazy in the best way. Every bite tastes clean and high quality, and you can tell right away this isn’t average poke. The portions are good, and the price feels very fair for what you get. Also, their marinated crab is amazing, but you have to go early because it sells out quick. If you come later in the day, there’s a good chance it’ll be gone, so I learned to prioritize this stop when I’m planning my day. I’ve tried so many poke places in Hawaii, and this is still the best one for me. Consistently fresh fish, great portions, fair pricing, and a convenient location. If you’re looking for a poke spot to return to again and again, this is it.

TLDR: Foodland’s poke is better. Ono is highly raved spot, but I personally thought Foodland was better (and cheaper per lb, BTW). The fish quality and freshness at Ono is decent (kind of fishy taste/smell), but it’s severely lacking in marinade depth and flavor. The marinade was kind of bland and especially the spicy ahi — way too much mayo and almost no spice and too creamy for me. The shoyu ahi was spicier and had more flavor depth. Other flavors were decent, but nothing really memorable. It’s worth a try and that you stood in a long line as well.

I had a Hawaiian tako + ahi tuna combo bowl. Easily the best poke I've had on the island! The poke was fresh and well seasoned, and the rice was well made. I went at 9:30 am on a weekday and had no problems with parking, and there was no line. No issues with my soy, gluten, and dairy allergies. Staff was knowledgeable about all ingredients used.

Just another POSITIVE REVIEW! Definitely come through for some fresh poke! Only downside is small parking lot & small seating area! But you should just take it to go and take it to the beach !! My boyfriend and I got spicy salmon and Hawaiian style ahi! 10/10 !

One of the best poke spots on the island. The parking lot is tight and often busy, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the warm rice made each bite even better. We ordered two bowls:Shoyu Tako and Shoyu Ahi with furikake in one, Hawaiian Tako and Shoyu Ahi with furikake in the other, plus a side of Shoyu Salmon. Every bite was flavorful and authentic, high-quality poke that really stands out.
