A Slice of the Mediterranean in Kahala

When you step into the Olive Tree Cafe, the first thing that hits you is the intoxicating aroma of garlic, lemon, and char-grilled meats drifting from the open kitchen. Tucked away in the quiet corner of Kahala, this neighborhood favorite skips the pretension of fine dining in favor of bold, rustic flavors that feel like a home-cooked meal in a Greek seaside village.

Authentic Flavors and Local Favorites

The menu remains loyal to traditional Greek staples. The Chicken Souvlaki is a standout, featuring tender, perfectly seasoned meat that pulls apart with ease, served alongside a side of warm pita that is consistently soft and pillowy. Don't overlook the gyros; they are substantial, messy in the best way possible, and packed with tzatziki that carries a sharp, refreshing bite of fresh cucumber and dill. It is common to see locals lining up for their lunchtime fix, often sharing the outdoor patio space where the ambient noise of the neighborhood creates an unhurried, communal feel.

What to Expect

The setting is casual, almost deceptively simple, with its humble furnishings and straightforward counter service. Be prepared for the reality of high-demand local spots: parking in the surrounding shopping area can get tight during peak hours, and you might find yourself waiting for a table if you arrive during the height of the lunch rush. However, the wait is usually brief, and the efficiency of the staff keeps the line moving. It is the ideal destination for anyone seeking a no-frills, high-impact meal that prioritizes quality ingredients over white-tablecloth service. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite after a day at the beach or looking for an easy, flavorful dinner in the heart of Honolulu, the Olive Tree Cafe delivers consistent, authentic Mediterranean soul.

I am so disappointed. I had heard good things about this place for years and finally got a chance to go yesterday. I was hungry and order 2 dishes to try - the fish and lamb souvlaki. they were ....meh. Very very simple - the order online advised 35 minutes to pick up - I could make both dishes in my kitchen in 35 minutes. Very small helpings - I ate both plates completely! And the price was ridiculous- $42 for the 2 which consisted of an untoasted pita, a $0.50 salad of lettuce and a few cherry tomatoes, a paltry helping of protein and a little tzatziki sauce. I could make this! and I could make both for $5-$6. Plus - very upsetting - they added $5.00 to my order as a "tip". a tip for what - handing me a bag? I understand the ownership of this restaurant changed last year - maybe the good reports were from previous owner. I will NOT be back.

Solid Greek food at a reasonable price here. I got a chicken souvlaki pita with salad and a baklava. Everything was delicious. The chicken was cooked perfectly and very flavorful, the salad dressing was super good, and I loved the baklava. Would be awesome if the sandwich had more meat and toppings. Maybe they can offer an option to double the protein. I’ll ask next time I go. Pita bread could be a little softer too, but it was good. Restaurant was buzzing on Saturday evening when I went. I ordered takeout at the counter and it took about 30 min. Not bad since everyone says it takes about an hour, but I’ll definitely order ahead next time!

As an old school customer(been going since 2003) it is hard to adjust to the new owner's style of running this long standing establishment. The food is about the same, but for those who have been going it is missing the most important ingredient, TLC. Having known the former owners and staff, I always felt welcomed as family. The new staff does not have that warmth, nor the understanding what this establishment was like in the glory days. Currently, they no longer answer their phone. They only accept online orders and every time I've ordered, the food has not been ready by at the time it is promised. I guess they are both slower at making food and unable to answer phones, the old staff could both make food quickly and answer the phones. To make matters worse, they seem not to care about these promises and offer a basic sorry for breaking their agreement to have food ready by the time given. This is very frustrating and unprofessional. I do not live near this restaurant and I love it so much I was always willing to go out of my way to support them. Moving forward, I am going to try new places and only come when its convenient. Change is the only constant in life and the most recent changes to this place has been negative for this long time customer. Wishing the new owners and staff all the best in their efforts to maintain the same expectations that were upheld by the former owners.

Olive Tree Cafe is amazing! This counter-service restaurant offers delicious, high-quality, and affordable food! I was extremely impressed! The appetizers we ordered were all $7.99 or less, and the mussel ceviche stood out the most. It came with six pieces and was absolutely delicious. Oh, and don’t get me started on the feta! Definitely order extra slices—at least one per person. You won’t regret it. For my entrée, I had the organic chicken souvlaki, which was moist and juicy. You can order it as a pita or a salad, and if you choose the pita, it comes with a side salad. We finished with the baklava, which was perfectly flaky and nutty with just the right amount of sweetness. Did I mention it’s BYOB? Bring your favorite bottle of wine and enjoy a glass while you wait for your food—it makes the experience even better! Olive Tree Cafe is a great spot for a girls’ night out, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and even a parking lot. The service is friendly and welcoming. I’m already looking forward to my next visit with friends to share another meal here!

Olive Tree Café blew me away—easily the best Mediterranean food I’ve had in for a long time! The hummus and baba ghanoush were absolutely incredible—creamy, fresh, and packed with flavor. I ordered the souvlaki next, and it was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. Even though I was already full, I couldn’t resist trying the baklava… and I’m so glad I did. It was just right—flaky, not overly sweet, and the perfect finish to an unforgettable meal. Can’t wait to go back!

Top notch salads, both the Greek and tomato are fantastic and I always get the extra side of feta. The hummus and grape leaves are both very good and I love the fresh baklava. Only take out for now and still cash only, but worth the minor inconvenience. Weekly Specials! Sun/Mon - Spanikopita Tues - Chicken with saffron rice Wed - Lamb shank Thurs - Vegetarian eggplant Fri - Greek lasagna Sat - Salmon souvlaki

Site says indoor and outdoor seating. Chairs stacked up in the corners where you could not take them down to place them around empty tables…and no it was not even close to closing time. The hummus was alright, had better. Was missing a meal even after he read off what we ordered. Wasn’t in the bag and didn’t realize until we were home. Again, would have been caught if there was sitting available as advertised. And lastly, the guy that took the order, seemed not to be bothered when asking questions or even ordering the meals.

Such good food, such sweet staff and such fast service! Takeout and cash only spot with some fun rotating daily specials. The baklava was in particular super good and not totally drenched in honey (which we preferred!).

Genuine, casual dining with phenomenal service and great prices. Seasoning is gentle so the natural flavor of the ingredients really comes through. Great for those that typically find restaurants in Hawaii to be too salty. The salads and vegetables in each entree marry well with their main dish and there is a spread of very well priced appetizers available for tons of variability between different visits. Be prepared with cash because they do not accept cards or mobile payment. A nice wine shop next door compliments the BYOB policy here at Olive Tree Cafe. Great place for impromptu meals because the food comes out quickly and there is a good amount of parking available.
