Honolulu’s for Authentic Thai and Lao Spice

Tucked away near the bustling heart of Honolulu, Olay's Thai Lao Cuisine offers a refreshing departure from the usual tourist-heavy dining options. This is a space where the air hangs thick with the scent of toasted chiles, fresh lime, and fermented fish sauce—the signature markers of genuine Lao cooking that you won’t find at every street corner in Oahu.

A Bold Departure from Mild

If you are looking to test your limits, the spicy papaya salad is non-negotiable. It arrives with a sharp, pungent kick that balances perfectly with the crisp, cooling texture of the shredded green papaya. Unlike the sweeter, peanut-heavy Thai variations found elsewhere, the kitchen here leans into the funky, savory profile of the Mekong region. Their khao soi is equally compelling, featuring a rich, golden curry broth that clings to soft egg noodles, topped with a generous pile of crunchy fried noodles for texture.

The Neighborhood Pulse

The atmosphere is unpretentious and stripped back. It feels like a local kitchen where the priority is strictly on the wok-fired heat and the depth of the broth. You might find the seating a bit cramped when the lunch rush hits, and the decor is intentionally minimal, focusing your attention entirely on the steam rising from your bowl. It’s an ideal spot for food enthusiasts who prefer substance over spectacle. Because it sits in a dense local pocket of Honolulu, parking can be a bit of a localized puzzle, so arrive early or be prepared to scout the surrounding side streets. For those who crave the bold, aromatic, and sometimes unapologetically intense flavors of Southeast Asia, Olay’s provides an essential, no-frills culinary experience.

Food is very fresh and clean! Portions are generous and very well garnished. Flavours standout, very well balanced flavours. Each dish is different, loved the peanut curry! Great vegetarian options! Tofu in the red curry was particularly good. Drunken noodles and fried rice were awesome! We over ordered and the leftovers were fantastic the next day!

Took a chance stopping by without a reservation at 6:30pm on Saturday night. Hostess was kind enough to squeeze us in. I was delighted that she graciously sat us at the table right in front of the koi pond. Server greeted us and bought our delicious drinks, Thai tea and an ice coffee. Next came the crispy fried calamari and the garlic pork sticks. Calamari was crunchy and the pork was tender and well seasoned. My guest enjoyed the Sai Qua, the homemade Lao sausage with sticky rice and | liked the Thai hot pad siew. They didn't have mango and sticky rice nor the lod xong so we'll be back! Food was tasty, service was attentive and the ambience was spectacular.

It was a pleasant suprise to find an open yet private outdoor set up restaurant in middle of China town. Serene astmosphere with water, ponds, greens, and open seating. Feel like we were in Thailand again. Food was supringly flavorful. We had tom-yum, papaya salad, garlic pork stick, chicken wings, padthai, penang curry. Its recommended to get Thai coffee or tea if you'd need to cool down eating medium spicy food. The drinks were good. This is the 3rd best Thai restaurant we tried. I gave it 4 stars on food because even though I found them exceed expectation, the 3 dishes I always order at Thai place were short of their signature taste. Tom-yum missed its significant contrast between sour and salty and mam ruoc hint. Papaya salad also missed its mắm taste, and the green beans werent smashed for earthy taste and the fish sauce they used wasnt strong enough. Penang is lighter than I expect, the other place in Orange I tried has a very deep curry taste where its richness just enough to stay on your taste bud without overpowering everything else - feeling like the dish was simmered for hrs before uts served. This one doesnt have that. But I would come back because in the end, it is very fulfilling.
