A Taste of Japan in the Heart of Honolulu
Finding a reliable spot for a quick yet authentic lunch in Honolulu can be a challenge, but Obento Rinka on South Beretania Street delivers exactly that. This understated shop focuses on the art of the Japanese bento, prioritizing fresh, high-quality ingredients over flashy presentation. As you step inside, you are greeted by the steady hum of a busy kitchen and the enticing, savory aroma of freshly grilled salmon and house-made sauces.
The Bento Experience
The menu is designed for those who appreciate variety and balance. Their signature bento boxes are packed with care, featuring perfectly seasoned rice, crisp pickles, and proteins that range from light tempura to savory chicken katsu. You will notice the dedication to detail in the texture of their sides, which maintain their crunch even after being packed to-go. It is an ideal stop for office workers in the Beretania area looking for a substantial lunch that avoids the heaviness of standard fast food.
Local Observations
While the quality of the food is top-tier, keep in mind that this is a grab-and-go focused operation. The space is efficient rather than sprawling, so expect a quick transaction rather than a lingering dining session. Parking along this stretch of the city can be tight, so be prepared to navigate the sidewalk scramble if you are swinging by during the peak lunch hour. For those seeking a reliable, no-nonsense Japanese meal that respects traditional techniques, Obento Rinka remains a cornerstone of the neighborhood food scene.

One of the few places we always come to but good for the plane. Reasonable price and tasty bento. Takeout only.

Their bentos were not especially good - bought four types - one was the daily special, which seemed to be a slightly better deal than the others. I don’t really care about the little colourful food dividers and sleeves or the authentic Japanese looking bento box - I just like to eat something that tastes good, in a decent amount, within reasonable cost (already taking into consideration the horrendously expensive place that Oahu is). None of that happened here - unfortunately - although I did go in the afternoon, so maybe they have better bento in the morning, I don’t know. The tiny yuzu cheesecake they had at the time was sad and expensive as well. The glum, inattentive man behind the counter did not add to their benefit either. Want to give them another try but probably not.

We had a picnic at our daughter’s school so we decided to pickup some bentos. Without knowing anything about this place we stopped by and they have some great bentos here! Full on Japanese bentos with nice packaging, everything nicely organized and beautiful in its little space. Food was delicious and the lady there was friendly. I’m so glad we stopped here as I now know a good place to get bentos.

I got the “healthy bento.” it’s a little pricey for lunch ($14 + tax) but for Japanese food it’s the norm in Honolulu. it was delicious - I would order it again. Good for a quick weekday lunch - I was in and out of the shop in under 5 minutes. I’m hoping I can get there one day for one of the udon and tempura daily bento specials.

If you've ever been to a department store's food hall in Japan, then Obento Rinka will give you a very familiar vibe. This place brings a flood of joy to me because stopping at a food hall (especially right before closing for deeply discounted bento prices!) is one of my to-dos every time we visit the motherland. Obento Rinka is a gem. Delish bento, no doubt. Legit Japanese options. (See my pics!) Kind staff. Easy street parking - here's to hoping someone has left a few extra mins of their already paid for meter! ...and the convenience can't be beat...just pick what you want, pay & go! Support small local businesses!

One of the best sushi bowl I’ve ever had in Hawaii. I tried the Nakaochi bowl which is soooo good and it’s like $10 after tax, much better than Hawaiian ahi poke bowl. Didn’t take any picture of the bowl because I was too excited to eat, but I will definitely come back!
