A Taste of Local Honolulu Life

Stepping into O'Ahu Grill, the first thing that hits you is the scent of kiawe-smoked meats wafting from the kitchen. This isn't your polished resort dining; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense spot where the sound of sizzling grills competes with local chatter. It serves as a go-to for residents looking for an authentic plate lunch that leans into the traditional culinary roots of the island.

Signature Island Favorites

The menu focuses on consistency and heritage. Their signature kalua pork is shredded to perfection, offering a salty, smoky depth that pairs exceptionally well with the customary scoop of macaroni salad. If you visit during the lunch rush, expect a lively, high-energy environment where the staff moves with impressive speed. The local staple, a hearty Loco Moco, remains the crowd favorite, featuring a generous, well-seared patty smothered in a rich, house-made gravy.

The Neighborhood Experience

Situated comfortably within the Honolulu community, O'Ahu Grill captures the spirit of relaxed, communal dining. While the space is compact and can get quite cozy during peak hours, the trade-off is the genuine warmth you feel from a team that knows many of their regulars by name. Be prepared for a minor challenge finding street parking nearby—a common reality in this bustling part of town—but the reward is a meal that feels like a home-cooked tradition. Whether you are a local grabbing a quick bite before hitting the surf or a visitor seeking an honest representation of Oahu's food culture, the experience here is grounded, flavorful, and distinctly Hawaiian.

Visited Oahu Grill some time ago with friends from the military and recently found ourselves reminiscing about it, so I wanted to leave a review. Really great authentic Hawaiian food—our group mostly had the loco moco, which was surprisingly good. The pork and other dishes had more depth and flavor than many larger tourist-area restaurants. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly, helpful, and took time to explain menu items and preparation. They even offered samples of dishes we didn’t order. We were told everything is made in-house, which showed in the quality. Very welcoming, local feel and reasonably priced for the quality. Overall, a great experience with good food and hospitality. I’d definitely go back if I’m in the area. Keep in mind things can change over time, but if it’s still family-run and made in-house, I’m sure it’s still excellent.

Super great service, super friendly, super accommodating to rookie Hawaiian food eaters. Food was good but overall tended to be a little too salty. It was so good to try authentic local food.

Google stated they are wheelchair accessible. Totally WRONG! I even called the restaurant yesterday & was told they were. A total LIE. Now for the food. The driest Lau Lau I’ve ever had & tasteless poi. The guy working was very nice & helpful getting us out the restaurant to get a cab. He was the only thing positive about the whole experience. No wonder a lot of the reviews said they weren’t busy, lousy food.

True local shop. We had the tripe stew and pipikaula combo plate and they had generous portions. One of our favorite tripe stews on the island too! Service really stood out as everyone was so kind. Definitely a place to go try out!

Oahu Grill is a small family business style restaurant. When we arrived on a Saturday during lunch time, there was only one person on staff and he greeted us with familiarity. The space is small and doesn’t offer much in the way of decorations. We ordered one of the large plates and split between our group as we were food touring the area and he was kind enough to give us larger portions than is typically served so we could try lots of options while still feeling satisfied. The quality of the food was traditional home-style, like your grandma would make, but of course Hawaiian. The chicharron was delicious, but the meat was a bit dry and tough. Dipping it in the soy and vinegar sauce helped add moisture and also a nice acidic kick. We also got the squid lu’au, which was a bit odd to me as someone who’s never had it, but the taro leave mixture was really delicious and paired with the rice beautifully. The laulau pork was my favorite on the plate because every bite was tender and juicy. The poi was not for me as the texture reminded me of pudding, but made of taro root and it was cold. It’s more of a personal preference though. I loved ending the meal with the coconut jelly. Even though the textures and flavors aren’t the same, it reminded me of the effect arroz con leche has at the end of a spanish meal, probably because of the milk aspect. Delicious!

Food was really good, sadly it was close to the end of the evening so they were out of a few things. Friendly staff and quick service here. Had the Laulau and kaluha pork salad!! The pork wrapped in the tea leaves was delicious. Tried poi for the first time, I see why people add sugar and milk, it is very bland in taste. I'm a fan of trying new things so if you haven't tried it please do. The haupia is light in flavor, just know it's a bit more firm than you may imagine. Highly recommend a stop in.

The authentic Hawaiian food was excellent. The server was fantastic and explained the menu items and how they were prepped. Even provided samples of items we had not ordered. The flavors of pork and other items had a better taste than some of the larger restaurants in the tourist areas. We were told everything was made in house. Loved the friendliness and local fare. Would definitely come back again! Prices are very reasonable as well.

Authentic Hawaiian cuisine! And SUPER tasty! Super recommend for anyone wanting an authentic experience. The kids liked the Kahlua pork mixed with rice, so there are options for picky eaters 👍 Located within a shopping area. You need to pay for parking, but it's like .75 cents. And you pay before exiting so don't try to exit without physically paying beforehand.
