Handcrafted Artistry in the Heart of Honolulu

Stepping into Oahu Cake Studio, you are greeted by the faint, comforting scent of Madagascar vanilla bean and browned butter. This isn't your typical walk-in bakery; it is a dedicated creative space where pastry chefs transform flour, sugar, and local tropical ingredients into edible architecture. Situated amidst the bustling creative hubs of Honolulu, the studio specializes in custom, high-end cake design that prioritizes both structural integrity and refined flavor profiles.

The Signature Studio Approach

The team here treats every commission as a unique project, moving away from mass-produced aesthetic trends. If you stop by for a consultation, you will notice the minimalist, polished workspace that reflects their precise technical approach. Whether you are looking for a tiered wedding masterpiece or a sophisticated birthday centerpiece, the focus remains on moisture-rich sponges paired with swiss meringue buttercream that isn't cloyingly sweet. They frequently incorporate local inspirations, such as lilikoi curd or haupia layers, grounding their modern techniques in island tradition.

What to Expect

Because the studio functions primarily as a design house for pre-ordered custom work, the space remains quiet and focused, perfect for couples planning events or individuals seeking a personalized consultation. One thing to keep in mind is that due to their meticulous production schedule, they strictly adhere to appointment-only visits, so do not expect to pick up a last-minute dessert from a display case. The lack of foot traffic ensures that the bakers can maintain the high level of detail required for their elaborate fondant work and sugar-flower artistry. It is an ideal spot for those who view a dessert as a centerpiece rather than an afterthought, specifically for discerning clients in the Oahu region who value custom, high-quality baking over speed.

As a local, kulu kulu has been my favorite desert shop for over a decade. It is never too sweet, and the staff is friendly. When there’s birthdays, my family & I always choose kulu kulu. This year, we got a Christmas cake! They always have specials, like a hello kitty version of my favorite strawberry shortcake too. I also like their iced Kona coffee and jelly matcha, they’re so underrated! Make sure to get a stamp card too!

All the other Kulu Kulu locations have closed down (Royal Hawaiian, Ala Moana, Shirokiya) so it's now out of the way for me as it's located in the outer edge of Waikiki (and who loves driving in Waikiki? Not me!) but this will not stop me from coming here if I need a specialty cake or desserts when I want to impress someone or just treat myself! I will brave the H1 traffic, the lack of parking, the traffic jams, the bad drivers, the road ragers, etc just to eat these delicate, beautiful, light and airy, fresh and not-too-sweet treats! I have heard that Kulu Kulu will validate a 30-min parking if you buy $10 or more at Eaton Square but I haven't used this feature yet as I normally park somewhere and walk over. If you love chocolate, get the Nama Chocolate, it's been their standard offering for years, and I've been getting their cold, semi-sweet cubes of ganache dusted in cocoa powder that melts in your mouth; similar to Royce Chocolate, but I think this is tastier. Their Panna Cotta offerings are creamy, light and refreshing leaving you wanting more. I also love their little individual mousse cakes, in this case the Ube Coconut Mousse, presented like little bite-sized pieces of luxury flavored exquisitely! This bakery deserves the 1-star Michelin rating in my opinion, I just love their offerings that much!

Checked out several bakeries yesterday looking for a good mango mousse cake. Kulu was the **winner**. REAL mango, no artificial flavoring. Also the matcha strawberry mousse cake blew me away. The intensity of the matcha flavor was perfectly balanced by a light sweetness, plus how amazingly beautiful it was with the gold green shimmer. They said they usually don’t make that one into a cake but could if you give two weeks heads up. Both mousse cakes were an absolute flavor bomb on first bite. The only thing is that i left the partially eaten mousse sit out for several hours, and then the texture started to melt a bit. So it’s best to keep this in the fridge until you serve. Also tried the strawberry shortcake, and it was good but i didn’t like the syrup coating the strawberries on top.
