North Shore Grinds
About
A Taste of the North Shore in the Heart of Honolulu
When you crave the casual, salt-aired energy of the coast but find yourself stuck in the urban pulse of Honolulu, North Shore Grinds brings that island-style spirit to your plate. Forget the white-tablecloth pretense; this is a place for locals looking for a quick, heavy, and satisfying meal that mirrors the food truck culture found up near Waimea Bay and Haleiwa.
Island Comfort on a Plate
The kitchen leans heavily into traditional Hawaiian comfort food. You will find their signature garlic shrimp—soaked in a rich, pungent butter sauce that demands a stack of napkins—alongside perfectly seared kalua pork. The scent of charred proteins and steamed jasmine rice hits you the moment you step through the door, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a backyard barbecue than a formal eatery.
The Practical Details
Because the shop prioritizes high-volume preparation, you might find the seating area a bit snug during the lunchtime rush. It’s an ideal spot for a solo lunch or a no-fuss takeout haul before heading to the beach. The sounds of the open kitchen, with clattering pans and island reggae playing over the speakers, ground the space in authentic Oahu culture. While parking in this part of Honolulu can be a bit of a localized headache, the trade-off is a menu that captures that elusive, rustic North Shore flair without the hour-long drive north.

I ordered lunch 11:20 on a weekday using their website. It was ready for pick up at 11:50. We were planning to share a combo plate lunch but I through it might not be enough so I added a mini chicken katsu. The mahi was delicious, tender and the tartar sauce was yum. The ribs fell off their respective bones but they didn't have any obvious dry rub. (required dipping into the accompanying pool of BBQ sauce) The steak was TOUGH. I don't speak pidgin but it was "broke da mouth" but not in a good way. I struggled to chew and then gave up. Chicken katsu and its sauce were nostalgic to eat as it was my high school go-to at plate lunch places.

Wife and I were in the area and looking for some quick local eats. This spot was top notch. Fresh and made to order Teri steak was super tender and the Chicken Katsu was crisp & delicious. Couple tables on the sidewalk and window bar top seating is available inside. We will be back!

I finally found a traditional Hawaiian spot in Oahu, and North Shore Grinds absolutely delivered! The chicken katsu was incredibly fresh—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. I also tried the #3 Hawaiian plate, which was an authentic, hearty, and delicious taste of local tradition. And let me tell you, the mac salad did NOT disappoint. Creamy, perfectly seasoned, and the ideal complement to the rest of the plate—it’s the kind of side dish you could eat all on its own. On top of the amazing food, the customer service was outstanding. Friendly, welcoming, and truly made me feel like family. This place isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience that captures the heart of Hawaiian hospitality. If you’re looking for a genuine local spot that nails both food and service, North Shore Grinds is a must-visit.
