A Slice of Saigon in the Heart of Kaimuki

Stepping into Niu Baguette feels like stumbling upon a hidden sanctuary for carb lovers in Honolulu. This no-frills neighborhood spot has become a local staple for those hunting down a perfect banh mi. The air is consistently thick with the savory, toasted aroma of house-baked bread, a sharp contrast to the humid, breezy air outside in this laid-back Kaimuki district.

The Art of the Crust

What sets this place apart from standard sandwich shops is the commitment to the baguette itself. Each roll is baked with a crackling, golden-brown crust that shatters perfectly upon the first bite, revealing a soft, airy center. Whether you lean toward the classic pate and cold cut combination or the tender, lemongrass-marinated grilled pork, the balance of pickled daikon and carrots provides that essential acidic punch. The house-made mayo adds a richness that ties every layer together.

The Neighborhood Rhythm

It is the kind of place where locals drop in on their way to the beach or during a quick lunch break. Keep in mind that seating is minimal; this is a place designed for quick, high-quality fuel rather than a long, drawn-out dining affair. If you arrive during the peak lunch rush, expect a queue that spills out toward the sidewalk, but the efficiency of the kitchen staff keeps things moving at a brisk pace. If you are exploring the culinary scene near Waialae Avenue, this stop is non-negotiable for an authentic, reliable, and deeply satisfying bite that keeps the tradition of Vietnamese street food alive in Hawaii.

Wow…we loved our meals. We stopped here by quickly on our way from Waikiki to the airport, and easily found street parking. The vermicelli bowls with lemongrass chicken & tofu (and a banh mi with pork + chicken) were so fresh, so filling, and really high quality. Delicious Vietnamese iced coffee. The service was kind, as well. Highly recommend for a relaxed & high quality meal!!

We went at about 3:30 on a Monday afternoon and appreciate the customer service. The portions were generous, and prices are fair considering the location. The food came quickly and checkout was a breeze.

Nice small place owned by a couple. The owners are really sweet. I had the lemon grass chicken vermicelli. Based upon other reviews, I had high expectations, but I have certainly had better vermicelli bowls at a few other places in the USA. I intend to go back and try the bahn mi due to praise for it in other reviews, and will update my own accordingly. The owners are really nice, but after asking for more water, they seems to forget as I never received any more. Therefore, I can't give this place 5 stars.
