Fresh Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu

Tucked away in the busy streets of Honolulu, Nice Day offers an approachable break from the high-end tourist traps. The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious, defined by its bright, open layout and the hum of local conversation that fills the room. It’s the kind of place where you stop in for a quick bite after running errands in the Kaka’ako or Ala Moana area, finding comfort in consistent, classic preparations.

The Culinary Approach

The menu leans heavily into the comfort food traditions that define modern Hawaiian dining. You will find staples like savory fried rice plates and generous portions of tender proteins seasoned with a heavy hand of ginger and scallions. The kitchen emphasizes speed and heat; the sound of a roaring wok is a constant, rhythmic backdrop to your meal. If you order the signature noodle dishes, expect them served piping hot with a bite of fresh aromatics that cut through the richness of the savory soy-based sauces.

A Local Perspective

While the pace is fast and the service is straightforward, the appeal lies in the reliability of the ingredients. It is an ideal spot for solo diners or friends looking for a low-key lunch where you can actually hear yourself talk. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge when it comes to the surrounding street parking, as spaces in this part of the city fill up quickly during the peak midday rush. Despite the minor shuffle to find a spot, the warmth of the food makes the logistical hurdle feel like a small price to pay for a satisfying, authentic Honolulu experience.

I normally never leave negative reviews, but this experience was so bad that I felt the need to write one. I live nearby and had always seen this place busy, so I decided to finally give it a try. First, even though there were empty tables, we were not seated right away. After finally being seated, nobody came to our table for another 5–10 minutes. There were two menus on the table: one with prices for the main dishes, and another with only dim sum photos and no prices listed. We wanted to order dim sum but had no idea how much anything cost. Eventually, a lady who seemed to be the manager or owner came over, but instead of explaining anything, she just kept asking, “What do you want?” without telling me the prices. Only after I specifically asked for the prices did she finally bring out the ordering sheet. I ordered three dim sum dishes to start. The food appeared to be kept warm near the entrance and then served by the staff. The siu mai and shrimp dumplings were hot and tasty, but the shrimp and chive dumplings were completely cold and tasted very old. After one bite, I mentioned that they were cold. I expected them to replace the dish, but instead it was simply canceled. Since I had originally planned to order more food anyway, I decided to order congee instead. About 10 minutes later, it arrived with a small black bug with legs visibly sitting dead on top of the porridge. When I pointed it out, the server first said it might be burnt food, but after looking more closely, it was clearly a bug. I did not take a single bite and decided to leave immediately. The total for two dim sum dishes and one congee was $23. For the first time in my life, I did not leave a tip. Honestly, I do not understand why this place is always so crowded. Very disappointing experience!!!

Went here one Saturday morning. I saw plenty of people here of all ages. Half the restaurant was already full. Dimsum came out fairly quickly and the tea was a nice balance with all the dishes. I also saw plenty people waiting on take out orders. I'd definitely come back for dim sum and their normal offerings.

Was told to go here from some locals. We enjoyed all the standard dim sum. Our favorite was the deep fried sesame with sweet bean balls.

A classic chinese restaurant. I've only had dim sum here. There is a 10% discount on cash orders. Lots of older chinese ladies running the restaurant. Theyre not overly friendly but theyre not mean either-just direct. If you need something you have to speak up. The menu is in chinese and english. The dim sum menu also has pictures and you can point to items off the dim sum cart. I had to wait to order, wait to pay and then wait to get my food because it was so steady! Love their shrimp w/ chives! Price is comparable to other dim sum places. Parking lot is tight. I always pay cash.

Came with my friend for dim sum takeout at lunch, it seemed to be quite popular for dining with the local community, particularly kupuna. Takeout was also popular, and most know the routine so that the line goes quickly: Check out the menu with photos while you stand in line, and you can see what’s fresh out of the kitchen by glancing to the side where they keep the takeout orders. Pay for your order and wait at the side for your number to be called. The wait is worth it and despite the difficulty in getting parking during the busy lunch hour, it’s worth it. I’ll have to go again for the dining experience.
