A couple of workmates wanted to go to Nayong on Union Mall because they had Kare Kare that day. I ordered the two-choice plate, opting for Kare Kare (curry with peanut sauce) and Kalderetang (goat stew). My friends took the last of the Pancit so it was two scoops of rice for me. My plate cost $16.75. We brought the plates back to our office and uncovered our food. My plate looked fine, but I found the taste of the Kare Kare wanting. The curry / peanut sauce was not very tasty; it needed bagoong to add to the flavor profile. On the other hand, the Kalderetang was very good; the goat was tender, and the level of gaminess was Goldilocks perfect, just right. The Kalderetang featured pieces of potato and carrot, the latter adding sweetness to the dish. My compadres were less pleased. The one that opted for an all Kare Kare plate opined that Kare Kare must have oxtail and perhaps other pieces of offal; this one featured stew meat and a few pieces of tripe. He was an unhappy camper. The other had Dinuguan in addition to the Kare Kare. He didn’t finish his plate which told me he didn’t enjoy his dishes. The bottom line: We were disappointed and collectively stated we wouldn’t be returning; the food truck that appears nearby offers arguably better food for the same $$.
