A Kyoto Connection in Kaimuki

Stepping into this sleek, minimalist space off the main drag of Kaimuki feels like a direct transport to a back-alley kitchen in Kyoto. Nanzan Giro Giro specializes in kappo-style dining, a sophisticated yet accessible take on multi-course kaiseki that prioritizes the rhythm of the seasons. You won't find white tablecloth pretension here; instead, the open kitchen dominates the room, where you can watch chefs meticulously plate precise, intricate dishes behind the counter.

The Seasonal Progression

The menu changes entirely every month, ensuring that local island ingredients meet traditional Japanese preparation. You might find a delicate silken tofu appetizer or a rich, slow-cooked wagyu beef preparation that melts instantly. The pace is deliberate, designed for those who want to savor their food while chatting over a well-curated sake list. The signature dashi—the backbone of their cooking—is deeply aromatic and fills the dining room with a savory, oceanic warmth that anchors the entire experience.

What to Expect Before You Go

The aesthetic is defined by dark, moody wood and industrial accents that give the room a high-end, contemporary edge. It is perfect for a special date night or an intimate celebration where the focus remains on the craft of the meal. A small note for those planning a visit: the seating is intimate, so keep your conversations low to match the refined, quiet intensity of the room. It is a place for intentional eaters who appreciate the patience of Japanese culinary arts. Come prepared for a lengthy, multi-course journey that requires you to lean in and enjoy the slow unfolding of each flavor profile.

Very disappointing experience. I’ve eaten at many Japanese restaurants, and it’s rare to find one at this price point that is this bland and forgettable. The food simply did not justify the cost. More concerning, we informed the restaurant in advance that my wife is pregnant, yet we were still served food containing alcohol. That should never have happened. I also paid extra for the premium course, only to find that the upgraded dessert was the same dessert being given to another table for free. On top of that, we mentioned in advance that we were celebrating our anniversary, but there was no acknowledgment or special gesture at all. Ultimately, the biggest problem is the food. For such a high price, the quality and flavors were extremely underwhelming. The only redeeming part of the experience was the tableware and presentation. I would not return.

The food was pretty good in general. I think the $88 set menu was good enough; the portion is able to fill you well. The more expansive set menu gives you 2 more courses, and those two were actually not impressive at all. I would recommend the lower-tier menu.

Kaiseki 5 six course set menu, very delicately handcrafted by the Chef who has been serving this restaurant for 15 years; each course is unique, artistically presented, with balanced flavors Service 5 friendly, attentive Ambience 5 spacious, clean, minimalistic

It is always a treat to come here to dine and enjoy the beautiful presentation with the Nanzan pottery. We enjoyed every dish with delicate flavor and careful preparations. The waiter and waitress were friendly as well as the main chef. Parking is rather limited on the street.

Totally disappointed to spend money here. We have a table in front of a sink. The place is too small plus the toilet is dirty too. Food is a disaster and its not worth money. This is omakase but not fancy and no raw fish. We chose 9 courses 168$ no tax and tips. But the food is not good and small portion. We have to pay extra 80$ just for two pieces of lobster, a little caviar and 2 pieces of fish and the dessert is terrible its the normal chocolate cake and a matcha tea. Thats it. I feel so cheated to eat here!

The kaiseki meal was such a fun and delicious experience! It was so cool to see the kitchen completely open and the chefs preparing all the dishes in front of us. Everything was so fresh and carefully curated. The chef himself was so humble and skilled and it was great interacting with him and his team. Highly reccomend for delicious Japanese food with a fun and engaging atmosphere! Must try if you’re in Hawaii on vacation!

We picked the 6 course meal with one add on each. Every dish was so well executed and every bite was a flavor bomb. I see some of the other reviews say the portions are small but it didn’t feel that way for us; we were stuffed by the end of the meal. Each dish had a main protein and they were all premium ingredients (eg black cod, Hokkaido scallops, lobster, snapper). If I had one critique it would be the open kitchen - while it was interesting to watch the staff work, it did seem a bit chaotic at times. Some of the staffs seemed to be in training and that took away from the experience a little bit. Overall we were vert satisfied though.

Honestly saying, food was good and tasty and I liked the vibe in the restaurant. However, I expected more of “Sushi” type of Omakase but foods served there was more of cooked dishes. Amount of food hmm… was okay for me but not like ‘Oh I’m full’. However, I can’t complain that the price was cheap enough for course meal. Chef seemed dedicated to serve good food, just wasn’t my expectation of Omakase. If I lived in Hawaii, I’d go for anniversary for the vibe.

It is my first time to taste kaiseki course. I assume foods are kind of fusion of Japanese and western food but the taste was very impressive. Especially their tofu fry and green onion sauce was genius. Ochazuke at the end was really great. 👌 …

This was something amazing. Should be 6 stars. Food, service, atmosphere, was out of this world. One of the top 10 dining experiences I've ever had. We had the wine and sake sampler with our course meal. Just to be clear this is fine dining, but they did ask us if we had any allergies.
