Nami Kaze
About
A Modern Take on Pacific Flavors
Situated near the bustling Honolulu Harbor, Nami Kaze brings a polished, contemporary edge to the traditional izakaya experience. As you step inside, the immediate focus is on the open kitchen where chefs prepare ocean-to-table dishes with precision. The air carries the faint, clean scent of chilled sashimi and the savory charcoal smoke from the robata grill, creating an environment that feels both sophisticated and energetic.
The Culinary Focus
This spot has made a name for itself by prioritizing local sourcing. Their signature approach involves showcasing Hawaii’s seasonal catch, often featured in inventive small plates that encourage sharing. You will find that the house-made tofu is a mandatory order—it arrives with a delicate, creamy texture that sets it apart from standard preparations. The menu flows effortlessly from raw bar selections to robust grilled items, reflecting a deep respect for both Japanese technique and island ingredients.
What to Expect
The space is bright and minimalist, utilizing natural wood accents that draw the eye toward the harbor views. Because it is a favorite for evening gatherings and business dinners in this part of Honolulu, the noise level can climb as the room fills up, lending a lively, communal hum to the space. One quirk to keep in mind: the popularity of the harbor district means finding a nearby parking spot can be a bit of a dance during peak dinner hours, so arriving slightly early or utilizing a rideshare is a wise move. Whether you are seeking a refined date night or a high-quality meal with friends, the deliberate attention to detail here ensures the focus remains squarely on the plate.

Nice restaurant, I wish it had windows or some type of view to the harbor. The food was okay. Nothing bad but nothing amazing, especially for the price. We had a few different things. I think the appetizers - eggplant and Brussels sprouts were my favorite. The steak was good. The pork belly was meh.

A late review I confess, but that just means I've had more time to reflect and I've been thinking very fondly of this place! We hit the appetizers hard (I didn't try the uli tots but heard good things) I can confirm however this place is doing some wonderful things with eggplant. The marinated eggplant was so stupid good, custardy eggplant sitting pretty in a great marinade, with a hearty pile of chilled radish atop. Dare I say a celebration of the vegetable. We had to try the roasted eggplant too obviously and it was nice and warm with tomato miso and puffed rice, very smartly put together and executed fantabulously. The beet salad was good but not as exciting, granted I've had many a beet salad in my life and at this point they tend to blur together. I've also had many a chawanmushi and generally found it underwhelming but this fine place gave me the first chawanmushi I've loved. They were generous with the lobster which scored some easy points but even beyond that it was a beautiful thing, the radish and greens kept it interesting, egg was egging. I was a big fan of the mix summer roll too, very fresh and bright with that holy peanut sauce LORD one of mankind's greatest inventions really. For mains we split some sushi, had the amber jacked, tsunami and pika-chuna roll and again they were all delightful, thoughtfully done, hit the spot. The good times continued into dessert. I don't know what this lemon thing was and it was slightly too cold (messed the texture a little) but it tasted like heaven so none of us really cared. The matcha cheesecake paired well with it there was however I think a mix up because there was supposed to be cream on top and it was just straight up blue cheese, the only error of the night and not one that really put us off in the slightest because overall! The food was damn good and the service was even better. Highly recommend. Don't forget to try the eggplant

We were really looking forward to dining at this restaurant, especially with its impressive 4.7 Google rating—but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. Located in the pier parking area, the restaurant had a strong fishy odor as we entered. We were initially seated near the restroom with fans blowing directly at us and had to request a different table. - For appetizers, we shared the crunchy crab roll, Japanese eggplant, and ulu tots. The roll fell apart easily and lacked flavor. For entrées, we tried the lobster Caesar salad, special kampachi, miso black cod, and kampachi crudo. The salad had only two small pieces of lobster and was overloaded with croutons. The crudo was just average, though the black cod was quite good. - There was a long wait between courses, and the biggest letdown was dessert. We ordered two cookies, only to receive hard, pre-packaged cookies that tasted stale—definitely not house-made. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
