A Slice of Japanese Comfort in the Heart of Honolulu

Steps away from the bustling Ala Moana Center, Musubi Cafe Iyasume serves as the ultimate pit stop for locals and visitors craving a quick, authentic bite. This isn't a place for fine dining; it is a fast-paced kiosk where the rhythm is set by the steady wrap of nori and the steam rising from freshly cooked Koshihikari rice. If you are heading toward the beach or need a snack that actually satisfies, the portability of their signature offerings is unmatched.

The Art of the Musubi

While the menu is vast, the classic Spam musubi remains the gold standard here. The balance of the savory, grilled meat against the slightly sweet, vinegared rice creates that quintessential island comfort profile. Beyond the standard, you will find inventive variations like the bacon egg musubi or the spicy tuna option, each hand-pressed to order. The scent of toasted seaweed hangs heavy in the air, a distinct marker that you have found the right spot.

Practical Island Fueling

The experience is utilitarian by design. You walk up, choose from the glass display, and head out. Because the store is tucked within the shopping district, expect a steady stream of tourists and employees from nearby offices. Seating is sparse and essentially nonexistent, so treat this as a grab-and-go destination. It is a no-frills setup—you might find yourself balancing your tray while navigating the sidewalk crowds—but the efficiency and the consistency of the rice texture make it a staple for anyone spending the day exploring Honolulu. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-time resident, the convenience of finding high-quality, Japanese-inspired snacks in this specific corner of the city keeps the line moving consistently throughout the day.

I finally made it to Musubi Café Iyasume in Ala Moana—and wow, when I say they have options… I mean OPTIONS. This might be the biggest selection of musubi I’ve personally ever seen. Like, if you’re used to grabbing something quick from 7-Eleven (no shade), this is a whole different experience. For my first visit, I kept it classic and went with the teriyaki spam musubi—and yeah, it did not disappoint. The spam was cooked perfectly with that sweet, glossy teriyaki glaze that just hits right. The rice was slightly on the mild side at first, but they give you a soy sauce packet, and once you add that? Game changer. It brought everything together. Honestly, if you’re coming here, you HAVE to try the teriyaki at least once—but don’t stop there. They’ve got a crazy variety, including a bunch of mini musubi if you want to mix and match. Definitely a spot worth checking out if you’re in Ala Moana. Come hungry.

I got 4 Musubi from here. The shrimp avocado, spicy, bacon and egg, and black pepper. They were so good! A go to food when in Hawaii! They sell some merchandise with spam and spam Musubi themes. I got a magnet and keychain. This place is a great quick stop for some Musubi on the go.

Musubi Cafe Iyasume is absolutely worth the hype. Yes, the lines can be long, but the food makes it worth the wait every single time. The musubi are fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The simple ingredients are done really well. That said, they do run out of popular items, so if you’re not there early, don’t be surprised if your first choice is gone. My advice: go early, be patient, and try something new if your favorite sells out. Even with the wait and limited availability, this place remains a must-stop for consistently great musubi.

You really can’t go wrong with Musubi Café. They have bento boxes, and a nice variety of different musubis. I got the one with shrimp tempura and spam and thought it was a good combo. It’s a nice quick snack if you’re in a hurry/on the go, or you can get a bento or a couple more musubis if you want to fill up. Don’t be deterred by the line. It moves relatively quickly.

The perfect place for musubi with so many combos and such cute merch. We tried the location on Lewers street as well which had even more cute merch including pins and stickers.

This is an omusubi (rice ball) shop located in the food court on the 2nd floor of the Ala Moana Shopping Center. They have a wide variety, and since they are easy to take to the beach, I bought from here several times. I think the prices are reasonable. They also have cute bags with musubi patterns.🍙 04/29/2024 We came here to buy lunch for tomorrow's hike. After 6 PM, there's usually a 20% discount, but since it was even later, there was a 50% off sale. Thanks to that, we were able to buy a lot of rice balls. Half-price deals are always great! 🥰

Great place to grab a quick bite or a full meal. My favorite is the ikura mentaiko onigiri/musubi. I left off one star due to the small amount of filling I've been getting recently. I've held off posting a review to see if musubi filling would lessen and sadly it did. The taste is still great and I haven't found a better blend of Japan and Hawaii musubi cultures. I do not recommend getting the $8 mentaiko pasta. The serving size is fine, but it has just enough mentaiko for flavor, but not enough that I woiod call it mentaiko pasta. I was quite sad when I ate it, and considered making my review only 3 stars. But one bad dish should not take away from all the other good ones. The flavors here are great yet not overwhelming, and the combinations of various ingredients into spam musubi are a must try for any spam or musubi lover. They also have bento that are reminiscent of the old Shirokia that used to occupy multiple floors here.

Sometimes the musubi slides into other areas making it a surprise when you bite in but otherwise if you are able to select what you want the food is delicious and affordable. Friendly and polite staff. Discounts 20-50% off near closing times. Cute insulated bags. Musubi forms. Carries Pepsi products.

First time trying the Musubi Cafe at Ala Moana - Lanai. Everything looked really appetizing and many choices. I got the Shrimp Tempura with Avocado and Spam Musubi and also the Shrimp Tempura Bento. My spouse got the Salmon Musubi, Spicy Tuna Mayo Musubi and Spicy Tempura roll. They were decent and good for a quick on-the-go bites. Cons: Musubi had more rice than the filings. The portions were more rice for both the salmon and spicy tuna mayo musubis. If you are a rice person that's a winner but if not, you might find the rice overwhelms the fillings. 🤙🏽
