About
A Slice of Japan in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into the Keeaumoku outpost of Musubi Cafe Iyasume, you are immediately met with the savory, comforting aroma of toasted nori and freshly steamed koshihikari rice. This spot is a local institution for a reason: it masters the delicate balance of high-quality ingredients and grab-and-go convenience. Whether you are grabbing a quick breakfast before heading to the beach or fueling up for a day of exploring the city, the efficient, no-frills service gets you exactly what you need.
The Art of the Musubi
While the menu features a wide array of bento boxes and Japanese comfort food, the stars here are the signature musubi varieties. From the classic Spam to more adventurous combinations featuring bacon, egg, or spicy mayo, each rice ball is wrapped with precision. The rice is consistently light and fluffy, held together by crisp sheets of nori that provide a satisfying crunch. Don't be surprised if you find yourself waiting in a short line during the lunch hour rush—the popularity of these hand-held treats is undeniable, and the small storefront can feel a bit snug as locals and tourists alike crowd the counter.
Why It Works
Iyasume thrives because it understands its role in the Honolulu culinary scene perfectly. It is not about white tablecloths or lengthy tasting menus; it is about providing a high-quality, authentic snack that represents a fusion of Japanese tradition and Hawaii’s love affair with Spam. It is an ideal stop for anyone traversing the vibrant Keeaumoku corridor who wants a genuine taste of local island life without the fuss. Take your haul to a nearby park or back to your hotel for a convenient, delicious meal that feels like a homegrown secret.

Great place for lunch. Friendly and quick service. Musubis were great (spam and seaweed). Great tasting and very filling. 4 stars because of the fried chicken and tempura. They were soggy and tasted like they were sitting around for awhile. Stick with musubi and you should be good. Good location and easy to find but no dedicated parking. Good price and worth stopping by.

Hole in the wall kind of Musubi shop. Was expecting some flavor in the rice but turns out it was actually plain Japanese rice - or at least that’s what I experienced. Perhaps it was on purpose to reduce the saltiness from spam. Otherwise the onigiri is also worth trying.
