An Irish Anchor in the Heart of Chinatown

Stepping into Murphy's Bar & Grill feels like stumbling upon a fragment of Dublin that somehow drifted into the tropical humidity of Downtown Honolulu. Since opening its doors in 1987, Don Murphy’s establishment has transformed the corner of Nuuanu Avenue into the undisputed living room for the city’s legal and business crowd. You will hear the constant hum of high-stakes conversation punctuated by the clinking of pint glasses, creating a soundtrack that is unmistakably energetic and communal.

Classic Fare Meets Island Hospitality

The menu serves as a bridge between traditional pub comfort and local cravings. While the shepherd’s pie is a masterclass in savory depth, the corned beef and cabbage is the main attraction, especially during their legendary St. Patrick’s Day celebrations that effectively shut down the surrounding blocks. Expect thick, hand-cut slabs of meat that fall apart at the touch of a fork, paired perfectly with a cold pint of Guinness poured with precision. The fish and chips are equally notable, featuring a golden, tempura-style batter that provides a satisfying crunch against the flaky, fresh catch.

The Nuance of Downtown Life

The space is defined by its mahogany bar and walls adorned with historical photographs that trace the evolution of the neighborhood. It is the kind of place where space is at a premium; you will likely find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, which only adds to the convivial, bustling atmosphere. If you drive, be prepared to navigate the sparse street parking common to the historic district, or simply walk over after a day of exploring the nearby galleries and boutiques. Whether you are seeking a hearty lunch to power through the workday or a spirited late-night social scene, this tavern remains the bedrock of the local culinary landscape.

The open-faced turkey sandwich at Murphy’s is pure comfort food. The turkey was incredibly tender and covered in rich, flavorful gravy alongside creamy mashed potatoes. Even the sides stood out—the roasted vegetables were warm and soft with just enough fresh crunch, and the sweet-tart cranberry sauce balanced the whole plate beautifully. A must-order.

Classic Irish pub felt like I was away from Hawaii for a moment. The bar from the bartender outfit (he was awsome almost felt like he was playing a role and quite well) and old timey register even beer selection it felt like a pub through and through. Also I had the Shepard pie, delicious only complaint I'm not entirely fond of mushrooms and they were whole, it's petty I know.

John was an awesome bartender with amazing recommendations. We ordered way more than we could consume, just because we had to try everything! Soup of the day: black-dyed peas and ham - stellar! Crab cakes - omg! And Shephard's Pie that made me want to reconsider my Graggy's recipe (God Bless her memory)!

Looking for a traditional Irish bar? You have now found home here! First thing you see is an amazing interior of crafted wood, high ceilings and the hum of a bustling atmosphere. I entered and the bar war full of patrons that seemed to all know each other. Striking up conversations with a stranger is no problem here. Next you will be greeted by a seasoned and professional staff member that knows everything about anything Murphy's. I had the open turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce. Amazing! I went on a Friday, "Pie Day", so Mrs. Murphy's pies on the menu. The passion fruit cheese cake was divine! Thank you all for such an amazing experience!

Best downtown dinner spot ever! Murph is a genuine spirit and the staff are all amazing. I have never had bad service, food or libations here. I would tell friends from out of town to come eat here. It's where business deals are made, friends catching up, dates happen, and politicians shmooze. Never a dull moment here.

This is a great Irish pub on a busy corner in Oahu. The staff was attentive even with the crowd growing at 5pm on a Friday. The food was excellent and the two Snakebites that I ordered were on point. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a lively time at the bar and some delicious corned beef and cabbage anytime of the year.

I stop in any Irish/British pub that I come across, so I had to stop in here! Friendly service and awesome ole school pub decor. The Shepards pie is off the charts good, I ate the entire thing. Would call this a must stop if you are visiting the island, 10/10.

A great place for lunch whether it’s for business or pleasure. The help is genuinely pleasant to chat with and the food is fresh and delicious. Had the Shepherd’s pie and I highly recommend it. It was a delight to have gone there today. Pepe, my server, rocks !

Great place to get good food and great service. We went for lunch on a weekday and got there right when they opened at 11:00. Thank goodness we did because they filled up quick. It’s a testament to the quality of food and service here. I had the Irish burger and that blue cheese is gold! Additionally, the fries were some of the best I’ve had. A perfect amount of crisp. Whoever made those is the Picasso of fry making. So good!
