About
Modern Island Cooking in Kaimuki
Stepping into Mud Hen Water feels less like a formal dinner and more like being invited to a friend’s backyard cookout—if that friend happened to be a world-class chef. Located in the heart of the Kaimuki neighborhood, this space captures the spirit of Honolulu through a lens that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly progressive.
A Menu Rooted in Local Tradition
Chef Ed Kenney has crafted a menu that honors the history of Hawaiian agriculture. The cooking here isn't just about local ingredients; it’s about the soil they came from. You will find staples like the octopus luau, which arrives tender and rich, flavored with coconut milk and taro leaves. It is the kind of dish that rewards those willing to experiment with traditional textures. Don’t sleep on the seasonal vegetable preparations, which frequently highlight whatever the island farmers are pulling out of the ground that week.
The Sensory Experience
The acoustics can get quite lively, especially during the dinner rush, so come ready for a high-energy environment where conversation flows easily over the clinking of glasses. The open-air design invites the humid trade winds inside, blurring the line between the dining room and the bustling street scene outside. Be warned: the parking situation along the surrounding Kaimuki blocks can be an exercise in patience, so arrive a few minutes early to secure your spot.
Whether you are a visitor looking for a genuine taste of Hawaii beyond the typical resort fare, or a local catching up with friends over craft cocktails and small plates, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance. It is unpretentious, loud in all the right ways, and deeply committed to the idea that great food starts with respect for the local land.

Food was yummy. Service was NOT. Waited and waited and waited for water to be filled, NEVER happened. I had the evening special signature cocktail was wonderful and I would have had another, but no one ever asked me if I'd like one! The food is an interesting mix of Asian/Hawaiian/Local dishes which were all tasty. We had the Pohole, a sweet potato dish since the buttered 'ulu was not available, Peanut Tofu, and shared the Molokai venison ragu pasta. All were delicious. MHW Management -Please please do something about the less than desirable service. The staff need a bit more coaching. Mahalo.

My rating was modified due to inconsistency... 1. First visit was delicious, except for the chalk-dry ulu: "The he'e (octopus) here was well prepared (not chewy) with a creamy tasty luau, and the clams were well balanced with coconut milk. Please find another way to to serve ulu, as the deep fry came out dry and bland." 2. My second visit for my birthday was an utter flop: both the octopus and clams just tasted like salt licks. 3. My third recent visit was for drinks only (food felt too risky). Someone ordered the ulu which was delicious - soft on the inside, crispy outside. Please remedy this dramatic inconsistency, so I can feel confident to dine here again.

Their pohole salad is fantastic! I had the pleasure of trying pohole in Maui and have been eagerly searching for this dish ever since. Every dish they served us was a delightful surprise, and the salad in particular brought me joy. ☺️

My hubby took me to a bday dinner here last week and I’ve got to say that everything we tried here was a 10/10 and took a leap out of the culinary comfort zone, elevating Hawaiian food and letting locally farmed produce shine. I’ve never been so proud to be eating reimagined Hawaiian food, and enjoying a twist on a classic beverage. I’ve already told my gals we are due for a girls night out at this restaurant. The ambiance- 10/10, service 10/10, and the tastiness 12/10. We ordered the ulu and the chicken long rice croquette for starters, and whoa…hello umami bomb!! For our mains we ordered the sausage and clams along with the house bread, the ludovico chicken, and the opakapaka which was a special…we obviously took home food because it was too much but we wanted to try it all. It’s hard to rank all these dishes because everything was so different and tasted amazing. The clear winner tho was the chicken long rice croquette. We haven’t recovered since! We will be back to enjoy their rotating menu. We hear their weekend brunch is a must!

🌅 Mud Hen Water – Honolulu Review: Mud Hen Water offered an outstanding modern local dining experience, blending innovative flavors with strong execution and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu reflects contemporary Hawaiian cuisine with thoughtful preparation and high-quality ingredients, while the service and ambiance make it ideal for a closing celebration dinner. This restaurant delivered one of the most refined meals of the trip and is highly recommended for travelers seeking a memorable culinary finale.

This place balances between gourmet and local hangout. The menu is driven by local, small scale, produce seasonality. What struck me most was how invested staff are in the dishes, the origins of produce - and how they managed to slow down the atmosphere of the experience. To me, it was a relaxing and satisfying experience - a kind of meditation on what constitutes a meal connected to the land and the people.

My sister first introduced me to this restaurant ~10 years ago? We tried the family style meal last night for 4 and it was very good. I love the farm-to-table fresh produce, Hawaiian-Asian fusion flavorings innovative mixes offered in their cocktails and their dishes and sauces. The dining area is spacious and they keep their "garage" glass wall open to encourage healthy air flow. The host and our server (new trainee flying solo) were friendly and helpful. It can be more challenging to hear softer voices in the restaurant because of the interior decor.

What an awesome brunch space! Everything we ordered was delicious (roasted carrots, banana pancakes, ahi melt (usually one is used but today it was ahi), and my iced Chai latte! Super extra brownie points for being dog friendly since we like to take Panda with us when we go out He also made a few dog friends while there (Winnie and Rosie). Service was prompt and friendly. There are indoor and outdoor seating options. We will absolutely be back..but until then, I know I'll be dreaming about those scrumptious ulu fries!

Excellent meal with a wonderful atmosphere. We had the fried ulu, Szechuan lotus root, raw and roasted carrots, sausage and clams, and the goat cheesecake. I would have it all again but particularly recommend the lotus root and cheesecake!
