A in the Heart of Honolulu

Stepping into Morio's Sushi Bistro feels less like entering a typical restaurant and more like finding a secret clubhouse in the middle of McCully. The space is remarkably intimate, often requiring guests to navigate a modest, tightly-packed dining room that fills up almost as soon as the doors open. If you are looking for an upscale, sprawling sushi palace, this isn't it; if you are looking for soulful, authentic nigiri and sashimi, you have arrived.

The Chef-Driven Experience

Chef Morio creates a singular environment where the focus remains strictly on the quality of the fish. He is known for his no-nonsense approach to the craft, emphasizing the freshness of his catches over elaborate, fusion-heavy presentations. The signature rolls are balanced, but the true draw here is the omakase style of ordering, where regulars trust the chef to select the best cuts of the day. You will smell the faint, clean scent of vinegared rice and fresh sea salt the moment you sit at the counter.

What to Expect

The atmosphere is bustling and lively, characterized by the sounds of conversation and the swift, rhythmic slicing of blades against wooden boards. Because the kitchen is compact, the pace can sometimes feel brisk, but that is part of the charm—this is a spot for diners who prioritize culinary substance over leisurely, drawn-out luxury. It is a fantastic choice for locals who want to dodge the tourist-heavy crowds of Waikiki and enjoy a genuine neighborhood meal in Honolulu. Keep in mind that parking in this part of the city can be a challenge, so plan your arrival accordingly to ensure you don't miss your reservation slot.

The best sushi restaurant in the Pacific. Honestly, Morio’s is on the same level as, or even better than, Tokyo’s Nihonbashi. Yes, it’s that good. The cuts are absolutely phenomenal. The uni combinations were incredible, and the rockfish was outstanding. Chef Morio’s personality and performance make every visit a once-in-a-lifetime experience… unless, of course, you come back for more. Call and book early, this is a true bucket-list experience you simply can’t miss.

I came here for my birthday dinner a couple weeks ago and it was absolutely phenomenal. I've always been meaning to try Morio's but never had the chance since they are usually booked about a month or so out. So, pro tip: definitely plan ahead if you want to dine in here. With that said, all of the food was delicious. There were dishes that I didn't manage to take a picture of because I was too busy stuffing my face. Still, no regrets lol. The team was extremely accommodating for our entire experience. We added two additional people on at the last minute, which was no problem for them. Additionally, a couple people in our party, got stuck in traffic due to an accident and the team was very patient and made the proper adjustments to the timing of our meal. Additionally, they sent out a few drinks for our table to help me celebrate and it really made my night. There are a lot of new sushi ya popping up in the Honolulu area. Every single shokunin puts a ton of effort, time, and thought into their craft. So, it definitely seems like there are endless options when you are trying to pick out a sushi spot for your special occasion. This establishment has been around forever and I definitely urge you to at least give them a try. You won't be disappointed. One more thing to note is that the parking is actually on Young St. We were definitely a little confused thinking that it was on King St. Alternatively, there is parking available on the street on King St. after a certain time. But the building parking is validated and covered, so we opted to go that route. My message to the team: thanks again for a wonderful meal! I can't wait to see you again.

I can't recall how I heard about this hidden gem, but so glad I did. Definitely a meal highlight from our recent vacation. My husband did an omakase experience (which I certainly would recommend if you don't have any restrictions with seafood) while I ordered off the regular menu. The food was plentiful and prices reasonable. I can't recall all of the types of fish he tried but one bite was better than the next. Sushi was also fresh and delicious. This place is BYOB which is AMAZING! We had an array of beverages and they were kind enough to ice everything down and provide appropriate glassware. If you're lucky maybe you can sample some of their sake stash too... Staff is incredibly welcoming and fun to boot. Tip:MAKE A RESERVATION! EARLY! This place is tiny with extremely personal service.
