A Texture Like No Other in Waikiki

Stepping into MoDo inside the Royal Hawaiian Center, you are immediately greeted by the sweet, toasted aroma of rice flour and sugar. This isn’t your typical sugary confection; these are Hawaiian-style mochi donuts crafted with a signature chew that sets them apart from the standard airy pastries found elsewhere in Honolulu.

Crafting the Perfect Mochi Bite

The magic here lies in the preparation. Using a unique blend of high-quality rice flour, the chefs achieve a crisp, golden exterior that yields to a signature elastic center. You will often see the staff meticulously dusting the piping-hot donuts with seasonal glazes, ranging from deep, earthy black sesame to vibrant lilikoi. The process is transparent, and the scent of freshly fried dough often wafts through the open-air mall, acting as a siren call for locals and tourists alike.

The Experience

This is a quick-stop destination, perfect for grabbing a box to enjoy while walking toward the nearby sands of Waikiki Beach. Be aware that the display cases move fast—the most popular flavors, like the iconic glaze or strawberry, can sell out before the afternoon lull hits. The seating is limited, so plan to take your treat to go, perhaps finding a shaded bench under a nearby palm tree to watch the island pace move by. It is a simple, focused menu, but the dedication to getting that perfect mochi bounce makes it a mandatory stop for anyone craving a unique Hawaiian dessert experience.

Fun little mochi doughnut shop located in Mitsuwa marketplace (all the way in the back left corner). They offer a variety of flavors, our favorite was the cookies and cream. The top of the doughnut is more of a icing/frosting consistency, and it is this layer that gives flavor to the doughnut. We tried every flavor available that day and cookies and cream was a top favorite. The icing/frosting is very light in flavor. I would recommend this place for a doughnut or two. I fell in love with mochi doughnuts from Liliha bakery, and I have to say those are still my all time favorite, but Modo doughnuts are a close second... and they give local discount with an ID!!!

I had trouble finding this hidden gem near closing time which made me too late to get the flavor I wanted but I came back the next day and they had plenty. So, it’s in the Mitsuwa Marketplace inside the International Marketplace in Waikiki. I loved these unique and tasty donuts! Best were the key lime and cookies and creme. The matcha was just okay, not enough matcha flavor and tasted bland. Other than that, they’re not overly sweet and so delicious, soft, and chewy. Will definitely be back on my next vacation!

Addictive! Modo inside Mitsuwa store in International Marketplace. Saw this place was near our hotel so we went to try them. They have a lovely chewy texture and are shaped like many balls connected so they are easy to eat and share. Oreo cookie is definitely my families favourite. I enjoyed the lilikoi one as well. I agree with others that the matcha was a disappointment wish it had more flavour. Black sesame was also good. But all doughnuts were addictive and yummy. We brought a dozen home to Canada.
