Mitsuba Delicatessen
About
A Slice of Japanese Tradition in Kalihi
Stepping into Mitsuba Delicatessen feels like catching a quiet, nostalgic moment in the heart of Honolulu. Far from the bustling tourist corridors, this neighborhood staple captures the essence of a classic Japanese-style deli. The air carries the faint, savory scent of seasoned nori and perfectly vinegared rice, signaling the start of a quick but soul-satisfying lunch.
The Art of the Musubi and Bento
Known primarily for its mastery of local Japanese comfort food, the deli serves up some of the most consistent musubi in the region. The rice is consistently pressed to the ideal density—neither too loose nor overly packed—wrapped in crisp sheets of seaweed that retain their texture. Their bento boxes are a study in efficiency and flavor, often featuring balanced portions of grilled fish, tamagoyaki, and pickled sides that brighten the palate. Locals rely on this spot for a reliable, no-frills meal that hits the spot without the pretense of high-end dining.
Know Before You Go
Because it operates with a focused, old-school mentality, don't expect a sprawling menu or a place to linger for hours. It is designed for the grab-and-go crowd, making it the perfect pitstop if you are navigating the streets of Kalihi. Keep in mind that the space is compact; during the busy lunch hour, you might find yourself queuing up briefly on the sidewalk. It is a humble, functional storefront that prioritizes quality ingredients over modern decor, offering an authentic taste of Hawaii's deep-rooted Japanese culinary history.

Open early mornings (2am) when you need a good meal other than fast food in Kalihi and youre working the early shift 😥🤙 Been around forever, limited parking in front but service is fast so youre in and out. Known for their sweet potato fritters and okazu, I usually get a dozen fritters for the work crew and a bento for myself. Always gotta get side order of the cone sushi too 🍙 5 stars.

I stopped by while passing and it was about 9:20 am and it was already too late. They recommended I would need to come before 8 am to get the full menu. Nevertheless, I decided to get their chowfun and boiled hotdog and grilled hotdog and fried chicken. The hotdogs were acceptable and the chowfun was very tasty and the fried chicken was okay. The cashier was very nice so I would give them a 5 star. I will definitely have to try and stop by before 8 am next time.

Mitsuba Delicatessen is a true hidden gem in Honolulu that has captured my heart and taste buds! From the moment I walked in, I felt the warmth and hospitality that only a family-run business can offer. The staff is incredibly friendly, always ready with a smile and a helpful recommendation. The food here is absolutely amazing. Every dish is prepared with such care and precision, making each bite a delightful experience. The variety of offerings ensures that there's something for everyone. Their bento boxes are packed with flavor, freshness, and generous portions. I particularly love the mochiko chicken and the spam musubi – they are simply out of this world! The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you get. It's the perfect spot for a quick lunch, a family meal, or even catering for special occasions. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal.
