Mitsu-Ken
About
A Kalihi Institution for Garlic Lovers
If you find yourself navigating the industrial streets of Kalihi, look for the modest storefront that locals treat as a culinary pilgrimage site. Mitsu-Ken is not about white tablecloths or mood lighting; it is about the sharp, addictive scent of frying garlic hitting the air before you even push open the door. This is a grab-and-go sanctuary where the floor plan is tight and the queue often spills toward the sidewalk, especially during the peak lunch rush.
The Signature Crunch
The menu is anchored by their legendary garlic chicken. It arrives in generous, golden-brown pieces that walk the line between a crispy shell and a tender, juicy interior. The kitchen manages to balance a heavy-handed application of garlic with a subtle sweetness that keeps you coming back despite the inevitable garlicky aftertaste that stays with you for the afternoon. Their bento boxes are the gold standard for Hawaii comfort food, featuring a comforting base of fluffy rice and sides that taste like home cooking rather than restaurant fare.
Practical Realities
Be prepared for a quick interaction. This spot is optimized for efficiency, catering to workers and locals who know exactly what they want. Parking is a well-known local challenge—expect to maneuver through a busy lot that tests your patience during high-traffic hours. It is the perfect stop if you prioritize flavor over formality and want a genuine taste of Honolulu’s working-class food culture. Whether you are grabbing a box before a beach day or fueling up for a shift, Mitsu-Ken delivers a consistent, no-frills experience that remains a cornerstone of the neighborhood.

Popped in yesterday for a quick and light lunch for a few friends and myself. The order for each of us: 1 ea side garlic chicken (3 pieces) with extra sauce and a spam musubi What I thought would be a nice and small lunch, ended up being a TUMMY full haha. If you been here you know the pieces of chicken are massive and the music packs a wallop of rice. It’s a perfect meal for just $8 50 or so. I could have stopped short of eating all the rice and still been full. The chicken was on point - crunchy and soft and moist on the inside with that sweet garlic blast of sauce. The staff is always so friendly and serving with a smile. The food came out quick.

Amazing restaurant. Taste, texture, quality. And quantity are all off the charts. The garlic chicken is amazing, definitely one of the best on island. Gigantic pieces with amazing quality and quantity. The size adds to the flavor as well as it is so thick, but still cooked through. Even after an hour drive the chicken was still perfectly crisp and the sauce perfect. The chow fun bento was good as well. I would highly suggest this restaurant for both regular plate and bentos for later.
