Mitch's Fish Market & Sushi Bar
About
A Near the Honolulu Airport
Tucked away in an industrial pocket of Honolulu, just a stone's throw from the bustling airport runways, Mitch's Fish Market & Sushi Bar feels like an insider's secret. You won’t find polished tourist aesthetics here; instead, you get the hum of the nearby airfield and the distinct, briny scent of the freshest catch hitting the cutting board. This is a working fish market that happens to serve some of the most revered omakase in Hawaii.
Why Freshness Matters
Chef Mitch Yamaguchi has built his reputation on an uncompromising standard of quality. Because the kitchen operates inside a functioning seafood wholesaler, the bluefin tuna and local ahi you see on your plate were likely landed by local boats hours before. The texture of the nigiri here is buttery and clean, devoid of the icy finish you often encounter at less focused establishments.
The Experience
Stepping inside, the atmosphere is utilitarian and no-frills—a true "if you know, you know" destination. It is the perfect spot for diners who prioritize fish quality over velvet booths and white tablecloths. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge regarding parking, as the industrial lot fills up quickly during the lunch rush. It is best suited for serious sushi enthusiasts who appreciate the craft of a master chef working with the ocean's best inventory. Whether you are grabbing a quick seat at the counter or settling in for a full sushi flight, the focus remains entirely on the oceanic flavors of the Pacific.

Best sushi on the island! The fish comes from Japan & you can tell the difference. A very local place with accommodating service.

This is a good spot if you're passing through, like to/from Pearl Harbor from Waikiki, or just before going to the airport or right after arriving. It's walking distance from the airport terminal. Pretty good stuff! Definitely a strong a la carte fish list. Generally well-prepared sushi. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the outright best around Honolulu or that you have to go far out of your way to specifically eat here, but I also don't think you'd be disappointed. Generally a pretty low-key space. When I stopped by mid-afternoon on a weekday it was very quiet, only a couple other customers there and easy to walk in.

We are visiting and wanted to get fresh sushi before heading to the airport and this is probably the best decision we made on this trip. It is in a warehouse/industrial area with an unassuming exterior and interior, but there’s a huge sign with the word “SUSHI” so you won’t miss it. We really enjoy fatty fish and so we ordered the aloha party platter and uni sashimi for variety and it did not disappoint. The fish was fresh and the rice was appropriately sized and seasoned appropriately. The quality was on par if not better than the sushi we had at nice omakases across North America and some mid range omakases in Japan. Our favourite were the king salmon and otoro. The Unagi nigiri was also a stand out, it was perfectly charged and beautifully flavoured. We made a reservation and heard that it does get quite busy, but we went early (5pm) so there were no crowds.

Mitch’s Sushi in Honolulu delivers the kind of experience that keeps you planning your next visit before you’ve even left the parking lot. Nestled near the airport, it feels like a true hidden gem: unassuming from the outside, unforgettable once you sit down. The fish is astonishingly fresh, with pristine cuts that let the natural sweetness and texture of the seafood shine through, and the rice is seasoned with the kind of quiet confidence you only find at serious sushi bars. Every plate that comes out looks like it was composed for a photo, clean and all about the fish, but the vibe stays relaxed and welcoming rather than stuffy. What really sets Mitch’s apart is the balance between fine-dining quality and that casual, local, almost “secret spot” energy. It’s the kind of place where you can land at HNL, swing by for sashimi that tastes like it just left the ocean, and feel like a regular by the end of the meal. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable; the team is happy to guide you toward the day’s best cuts or omakase-style selections, and you can taste the pride they take in what they serve. If you’re a sushi-obsessed traveler or a local looking for that “destination” meal without going into Waikīkī, Mitch’s Sushi near the Honolulu airport deserves a permanent spot on your must‑eat list. Five stars, without hesitation.

📍 Location Very close to the international airport, which makes it super convenient. You can literally come straight here after landing. 🍶 Bottle Policy They allow BYOB, which is a big plus. We brought sake and plum wine. Personally, I think sake pairs much better with the food. 🍽️ Food • Oysters: not recommended. They were small and a bit pricey. Seasoning was fine, but not worth it overall. • Van Van roll: very tasty. • Grilled scallops: slightly overcooked. • Sashimi & sushi quality: very good overall. The amaebi (sweet shrimp), engawa, and fatty tuna were all excellent. • Highly recommend the Hotate Mayo Gunkan and the uni. So satisfying, especially eating the uni in one bite. • Grilled salmon collar: just average. 💰 Price On the expensive side, but the quality of the sashimi and specialty pieces makes it worth considering if you want fresh seafood near the airport.

An amazing place with some top of the class quality fish being served. Loved each piece of sushi which was the chef's choice. The fish quality was one the most superior I have had in a while! It feels like a totally hole in the wall kind of place in the industrial area of Honolulu. But it is most definitely a hidden gem. One more thing that was a stand-out was service with a smile. They really take care of you and check on you regularly to ensure your experience is enhanced. I would most definitely recommend a visit to this gem if one finds themselves in Honolulu! I was very glad for this to be my last gastronomic experience before catching my flight back to NYC!

Mitch's is a little hidden gem in the airport industrial area of Oahu. They always have fresh fish and can accommodate a good size group if needed. The best part is they allow BYOB. If you're looking for a great place to eat sushi you should try this place. Just know you will be payya premium but also getting great quality seafood.

The sushi is very fresh and I had the best salmon nigiri ever here.. so buttery and tasty. It melts in your mouth. Casual atmosphere that you would never know what it is from the outside. The inside is a lot bigger than you imagine once you look at the outside facade. They reuse plastic chopsticks yay…thank you for caring for the environment. Free Street parking. The food came out really fast. Service is friendly and nice.

This has to be the freshest sushi I have had on the island. Probably the freshest in all of USA. Only drawback was the miso soup was not served hot. We got there at 4pm so we had the best service since we were the only table. The Salmon Kama and salmon belly was really good. The best is our sushi platters. Thank you Mitch’s for an awesome food!
