An Artful Escape into Japanese Confectionery

Stepping into this tranquil storefront in the heart of Waikiki offers an immediate shift in pace from the surrounding beach energy. Minamoto Kitchoan is a masterclass in the Japanese tradition of wagashi, where every sweet is treated as a seasonal sculpture. The glass cases are lined with meticulously packaged gift boxes, featuring signature items like the Fuku-watashi senbei—a delicate, cream-filled wafer that strikes a perfect balance between crisp texture and smooth, sugary indulgence.

Seasonal Flavors and Traditional Craft

What sets this boutique apart is its commitment to the 24 micro-seasons of the Japanese calendar. You will frequently find treats centered around white peach, chestnut, or matcha, depending on the time of year. The Koshino-yuki, a soft, melt-in-the-mouth sweet, highlights the brand’s dedication to high-quality ingredients sourced directly from Japan. Because the interior is minimalist and hushed, it serves as the perfect sanctuary for picking up a refined souvenir or a thoughtful gift that stands out from typical tourist fare.

Local Observations for the Waikiki Visitor

While the aesthetic is polished and serene, be prepared for a quiet shopping experience where the staff moves with deliberate, focused precision. It is a departure from the bustling kiosks nearby. The prices reflect the premium nature of the ingredients and the elaborate presentation, so this is not a spot for a quick, cheap sugar fix, but rather a place for those who appreciate the aesthetic and cultural significance of artisanal Japanese candy. Whether you are walking over from a nearby hotel or exploring the shops of Honolulu, the presentation alone makes the visit worthwhile.

This shop was fancier than I expected, but the single package dorayaki I bought was the best I've ever had! Everything looks cute and elegant and the woman working there was polite and helpful. She had a reference sheet to help me know which items were dairy-free. High quality treats for you or for gifts and great service. Worth a stop while you're at the mall!

I don't know about any of the other items for sale, but the $45 Happy Holidays Confectionery pack was really bad. The packaging was very attractive, but the waffle cookies were way too dense, stale and heavy tasting. Other items tasted like I was eating perfume, and two of the items that said "Best Served Chilled" should have said "Must serve chilled" because it was like liquid. I don't think items like that should be included in a package mixed with items that don't need refrigeration to be served. The apple treat was okay. I actually feel REALLY bad that I gave these out for Christmas. I'm glad however that I got to try a box that I didn't end up giving out, because I'm sure that nobody that I gifted one to will ever say that it was bad, but I will bring it up as an apology.

My go-to omiyage store, especially during special Asian holidays like Girls Day, Boys Day, Harvest Festival and more. Perhaps they have done it in previous years, but this is the first time I recall mooncakes being offered. I came to the Ala Moana store to check them out, and was immediately offered a taste of the black sesame mochi, which was freaking amazing. Based on that sample alone, I got the black sesame moon cake for my friend. My favorite hostess gift is when they offer bundles in beautifully decorated bags. Unfortunately, you cannot customize the bundle, it’s whatever they offer. Also new to me were the mini cupcakes and tropical cookies. They are just way too many tempting pastries in the shop, it’s so hard to choose! Pro tip: Be sure to sign up for their rewards, it is very easy to rack up points. At 98 points, I’m 2 points away from getting $10 off my next purchase.

Minamoto Kitchoan is a wonderful establishment for high quality Japanese Sweets. My first experience was a sweet one with the purchase of their chocolate daifuku. Me and my friends have been loving this shop ever since. My mother picked up something different for me a few days ago. The Gozenguri Rice cake. I enjoyed the mild sweetness of the Kuri (chestnuts) which are a favorite of mind along with white bean filling. Very delicate flavor that went well with my favorite Kuon matcha. 🍵 Unfortunately unlike the great service I received with past purchases, my mother’s experience was different, she had reported to me that the salesperson was not very helpful. Too bad. But I’m very confident when I personally visit again myself, it will not be the case. I did, however, enjoy what she purchased for me and will be stopping by in the near future.

This is an authentic Japanese confectionery shop that conveys the tradition of Japanese sweets. On this day, we enjoyed traditional kashiwa mochi to celebrate the upcoming Children's Day. The freshly made mochi was incredibly soft, complementing the refined sweet bean paste perfectly, and it was very delicious. The display of kabuto (samurai helmets) to celebrate Children's Day was also magnificent. There were many other traditional and authentic Japanese sweets lined up, so I would love to try various ones someday.🤤

Minamoto Kitchoan at Ala Moana Shopping Center is a really niche Japanese oriented baked goods and collectibles store. Their items are high quality and authentic to their culture, making it worth their value. Staff was super friendly as well. These products would be a great gift choice, or for yourself to take home. I appreciate everything this store has to offer. It is located on the first floor just past the ABC Store. Thank you very much and God Bless Minamoto Kitchoan!

This is a high end Japanese snack or dessert shop. It's located in the middle of Ala Moana shopping mall. The items might be seasonal and they looked too pretty to eat sometime. Large selections of cakes, mochi, daifuku, baumkuchen, castella cake, etc. It's very well presented. Very classy decor. It's a chain as I have seen their other stores across US and other countries.

Great small shop for high quality Japanese sweets. Cultural display of Girl’s Day Hina dolls was something to see. I’m sure you can feel season!

My first time going into this store! My fiance got a box of assorted goodies from here so after eating most of it myself, I figured I'd better replace some items that I ate. The ladies working were really nice & welcoming. I'm not sure why these are called sherbets. They have a jello-like consistency & you can eat them chilled in the refrigerator or frozen. I like them chilled so I can really taste the flavor. These sherbets are delicious but oh so expensive at over $4 each. It's a good thing I don't live close by. These are totally worth it for a once in awhile treat!
