About
A Chinatown Staple for Crispy Perfection
Stepping into Mei Mei Chinese BBQ is an exercise in no-nonsense, high-quality Cantonese tradition. Located in the heart of Honolulu’s bustling Chinatown district, this is where locals head when they crave the unmistakable sheen of lacquered skin and succulent meat. The air is heavy with the scent of five-spice and rendered fat, a fragrance that acts as an immediate draw for anyone walking down the nearby corridors of the neighborhood.
The Art of the Roast
The display case is the soul of the establishment, featuring rows of glistening roast duck, soy sauce chicken, and the gold standard: roast pork belly with crackling skin. Chef-driven consistency is the priority here; the pork is known for its perfect ratio of crunchy, salty crust to tender, flavorful fat. You won't find white-tablecloth service here—instead, expect efficient, fast-paced service and a casual counter setting. It is the kind of place where the line moves quickly and people are there for the singular purpose of securing a lunch box packed with generous portions of protein over steaming rice.
Local Insights
While the food is legendary, keep in mind that the space is compact and leans toward a carry-out heavy model. Parking in the surrounding Chinatown blocks can be a challenge, so plan accordingly if you are stopping by during the midday rush. It is an unpretentious environment that rewards those who know exactly what they want. If you are navigating the downtown Honolulu area and need a quick, reliable, and authentic taste of Chinese BBQ, this spot remains an essential destination for serious food lovers.

Amazing spot for Chinese style bbq. We got a 3 meat combo for $20 and they loaded it up- it was plenty of food for 2! We tried the crispy pork belly, char siu, and roast duck an all were phenomenal. Excellent food at a very affordable price.

Our usual spot was closed early so we decided to follow the lines and try something new, and boy I'm glad we did. Got a half pound of roast pork and half of a Peking duck and we demolished it outside on chairs like animals. The five spice infused shoyu sauce is fire as well, really good blend of sweet and salty. Maybe my favorite new Chinese style BBQ on island!

I’ve been picking up Cha Siu and roast duck for years from Fong’s meat market since I travel often from the Big Island to Oahu and there aren’t any good Chinese meat markets here. That being said, yesterday I found Mei Mei Chinese barbecue yesterday and fell in love with their Cha Siu and Roast Duck. I ordered 8 dollars of the Cha Siu and 1/2 roast duck which was moist and flavorful. As my broken Cantonese understanding struggled to listen to their 8 years in business before they moved to their current location with her husbands guidance, found a new favorite for my favorites over rice.
