Mayita's Grill
About
A Taste of Home in Honolulu
Stepping into Mayita's Grill, you are immediately greeted by the charred, savory aroma of expertly seasoned meats hitting the flat top. This Honolulu neighborhood spot strips away the pretense of high-end dining, focusing entirely on the craft of authentic, open-fire cooking. The kitchen radiates a steady hum of activity, where the rhythmic chopping of fresh cilantro and onions sets the pace for a meal that feels like a backyard cookout among friends.
The Soul of the Menu
The menu centers on bold, unadorned preparations. Their signature carne asada is the star here—tender, deeply marinated beef that pairs perfectly with house-made salsas that carry just enough heat to wake up your palate. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch while exploring the city or settling in for an evening bite, the food mirrors the island's melting-pot culture, prioritizing fresh ingredients over complicated techniques.
Know Before You Go
The space is cozy, which makes it an excellent choice for solo diners or couples who don't mind a bit of a snug fit. While the tables turn quickly, the atmosphere is loud and energetic, filled with the clatter of plates and lively conversation. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a challenge, so consider arriving a few minutes early to secure a spot nearby. It is the kind of place that rewards those looking for genuine, no-fuss cooking rather than white-tablecloth service.

The most delicious tacos I’ve had in Hawaii, period. I had one chicken taco and one steak taco. Both tacos came with homemade pico and homemade guacamole, and all the salsas at the open salsa bar are also homemade. You add your own cilantro, onions, salsa, hot sauce, and lemon or lime—everything is there. You can really taste the authentic Mexican flavor that you’re not going to get at some of these other fancy restaurants. I’ve honestly enjoyed these two tacos more than many fine-dining places I’ve eaten at here. I wouldn’t call them childhood memories since I didn’t grow up in Mexico, but they remind me of happy memories from time spent in Mexico. It’s a small food truck in a parking lot, a one-person operation, cash only, $5 per taco. There’s one table with five chairs, and napkins and plastic forks are self-serve. If you want truly delicious, street-style Mexican food, I can’t think of another place in Hawaii that comes close to these tacos. 6pm-11pm Tue Fri Sat. Cash only. BYOB.

The best Street tacos I've tasted in Hawaii and this is coming from a person that lives in San Diego. The owner has been at this location for the past 10 yrs and he's originally from Mexico. My only complaint is that he's only 4 days out of the week. I got lucky to find him on "taco tuesday" and got a discount.

Highly recommended food truck. No fancy gimmicks it’s all about the food. One of the best tacos in town, authentic flavors. Home made Salas, sauces and a lot of variety of sources as well. Amazing flavors. One man show making the tacos. I would recommend some small barrels or stand up tables to accommodate more customers.
