A Slice of Hometown Comfort in Honolulu

Tucked away from the typical Waikiki bustle, Max and Lucy's serves as a neighborhood sanctuary for those seeking a break from the standard tourist fare. This spot leans heavily into the diner aesthetic, where the air smells perpetually of toasted sourdough and fresh coffee grounds. It is the kind of place where locals linger over breakfast plates while the soft hum of local radio fills the gaps in conversation.

The Kitchen’s Philosophy

Chef-driven but unpretentious, the menu focuses on elevated comfort food. You will find their signature breakfast burritos and buttermilk pancakes are the clear standouts here. The kitchen prioritizes local sourcing, bringing a fresh, island-grown sensibility to classic continental dishes. Every plate arrives hot, often accented by a bright local fruit garnish that cuts through the richness of the main courses.

What to Expect

The layout is intimate, which can make the space feel quite energetic during the busy Saturday brunch rush. If you are sensitive to noise, aim for a mid-week visit when the pace slows down and you can snag a window seat. Parking nearby can be a bit of a scavenger hunt, so arriving early or choosing a ride-share service is a pro tip for those navigating the urban streets of Honolulu. It is a genuine, no-frills destination for anyone who values a hearty meal served by a friendly, familiar crew.

Best roast pork, meatloaf and fried chicken. Everyone was so friendly. Parking is a little difficult but worth it.

Had a fantastic lunch here at noon. The whole spot is such a labor of love and testament to their family business. We tried two of their daily specials, their prime rib with chili and loaded baked potato, and a teriyaki salmon. We didn't get their potato-mac salad but we should have! The salmon was melt in your mouth divine and the perfect shoyu-sweet blend. Super 'ono au jus with the prime rib too. Also got to try their banana chocolate chip cake with cream cheese frosting, and a very tasty anko/red bean bar. The owner is so sweet and the staff are lovely and I'd be delighted to come back and try more specials and baked goodies! :)

Service was fast and upbeat. The food was plentiful for what you're paying. The fried rice was spicy and salty, great for a hearty meal, not so great if you've got a history of high cholesterol. There were no veggies in it. The chicken wasn't seasoned much, fried with chicken broth sauce, still pretty good. For $6 you get fried rice, a meat choice and an egg. I'm not a treasure hunter but I can't find that in town anywhere. Would come back for a quick eat!
