A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Honolulu

Step through the sliding glass doors into Marukai Wholesale Mart, and the tropical breeze of Hawaii instantly gives way to the orderly, meticulous rows of a Japanese grocery haven. This isn't your standard neighborhood market; it is a destination for those seeking genuine ingredients shipped directly from Japan. You will hear the polite, efficient rhythm of staff stocking shelves and the quiet hum of shoppers hunting for hard-to-find delicacies.

What You’ll Find on the Shelves

The selection here is unparalleled in Oahu for anyone looking to replicate traditional recipes at home. Their aisles are packed with high-quality miso pastes, premium Japanese rice varieties, and a seafood section that highlights sashimi-grade fish often difficult to secure elsewhere. If you are a fan of Japanese snacks, the massive assortment of matcha-flavored treats and savory senbei crackers is worth the trip alone. The prepared food section, particularly the bento boxes and freshly rolled sushi, offers a quick, reliable lunch for locals working in the surrounding industrial district.

Navigation and Tips

While the aisles are wide and brightly lit, the experience is strictly utilitarian. Do not expect a high-end shopping mall aesthetic; this is a warehouse-style environment focused on volume and value. Be prepared for a brisk, no-frills checkout process that matches the efficiency of the store’s layout. Parking can become a tight squeeze during the weekend peak hours, so plan your visit for a weekday morning if you prefer a quieter shopping experience. Whether you are a culinary enthusiast hunting for specific dashi components or simply looking for authentic imported goods, this Honolulu staple delivers consistency without the fanfare.

Some of the best fresh sushi around. Lots of food, drinks, and convenience items available, plus the staff is friendly and helpful.

I love Marukai. The store has great Japanese food and imported Sake. The local made food is delicious and it's reasonably priced. Many options too. Stop by if you are in a hurry and need to eat or if you're just looking for some authentic food!

I bought bento and musubi for a trip and it was delicious. The selection was impeccable and my favorite thing about the food was the attention to small details. For instance my bento had seaweed between the croquette and the rice to keep the croquette from getting soggy and it had mixed grains rice that was perfectly cooked, a generous and flavorful portion of unagi, and some delicious additional items. It felt like it was made with love and care. I will come back soon.

Marukai is my absolute favorite market to go to. Not only do they have fresh, quality bentos, musubis, onigiris, and sushi, but all the things they sell from other Asian continents are typically great, too. They have different fairs spotlighting different regions of Japan and their specifically chosen local favorites are made available to tempt and try out. I've always found something new and delicious from these! Plus, I can usually find a lot of things I really enjoy from previous travels there, too. The food is some of the freshest, most delicious, and plentiful I've had, especially at the price range. They always give plenty and I can eat two meals out of each plate lunch. My experiences with the staff have been positive, as well, so I can't think of anything negative to say. The closest I can come to is that certain fresh food choices run out quickly, but that's because they're so good, and people in the know get them as soon as possible. Which means I probably just jeopardized getting my stuff, too... hmmmm...

Wow! Huge selections of Japanese products. Before catching your plane, be sure to stock up (omiyage). So much food, sake, snacks... Different prefecture's specialty products to sample. Pictures tells the story.

I stopped by to get my early lunch, Ahi Poke Bowl, for $8.37 with tax included, which is a very cheap price. It was delicious also and so convenient. The diet pepsi was only $0.60, which was also so cheap. Very cheap and convenient so it is a great spot for cheap lunch while passing by.

Such a great selection of housewares and food at Marukai. I could spend hours shopping here. We picked up pantry items, snacks, 🍱 bento, sushi, onigiri 🍙. Had a great lunch at home from all the delicious items. I’ll bring home lots of gifts and snacks in my suitcase for later too. …

A lot of goodies and import stuffs. Very similar to Don Quijote supermarket but a little smaller. A lot of parking space. You don't need a membership account. A lot of Japanese and Korean products. They also have cooked meals ready to go or made to order sushi trays.

One of my must-go places in HNL and convenient location near the airport. There are great variety of Japanese cuisine materials and I cannot make sushi without shopping here. Generally, merchandises are not inexpensive but there are always super sale items which are really good deal!!! Membership fee is $10 a year but receive a newsletter with ads which sometimes includes a lucky coupon from time to time.
