Marugame Udon (spelling Correction)
About
A Masterclass in Japanese Noodle Craft
Stepping into Marugame Udon in the heart of Waikiki is an exercise in organized chaos. The rhythmic thumping of dough being kneaded behind glass windows sets the tempo for a dining experience that feels more like a bustling Tokyo train station than a casual Honolulu eatery. You will find yourself joining a queue that snakes out the door, but the momentum is constant; the assembly line process allows you to watch your udon being boiled, rinsed, and finished in seconds.
The Sanuki Tradition
This is the place to experience Sanuki-style udon, characterized by noodles with a distinct, firm 'koshi' bite. The broth, simmered for hours, carries a deep umami punch that grounds the entire meal. While the menu is extensive, the Niku Udon—topped with sweet, thinly sliced beef—is a local favorite for good reason. Pair your bowl with a selection of tempura, ranging from crispy chicken karaage to perfectly fried sweet potato and soft-boiled eggs, snatched directly from the heat lamp-warmed trays.
What to Expect on Kuhio Avenue
The energy here is relentless. It is loud, it is crowded, and you will likely find yourself sharing a long communal table with strangers while slurping your broth to the rhythm of the open kitchen. The aesthetic is clean, minimalist, and utilitarian, designed for high turnover rather than lingering candlelit conversations. Keep in mind that seating is limited and often competitive; don't be surprised if you end up standing near the condiment station to add your final sprinkle of tempura flakes, green onions, and ginger. It is efficient, authentic, and arguably the most reliable way to get a steaming, handcrafted meal without breaking the bank in the middle of Waikiki’s high-traffic corridor.

Always an experience going here. Always fresh food and fast service. You will feel bloated just be aware. And don't come starving or you'll buy the whole menu.

Fun vibes with music. No service tho, but I don’t mind. I ordered the curry udon, picking up some tempura along the way. Everything comes out amazingly. I enjoyed every bite of it. If I have a chance would definitely come back.

Plenty of indoor seating and no line at this location. FRESH to order, home made udon noodles and broth, you can customize what goes inside your udon. FRESH fried tempura. Take out or sit down options available.

We went to Marugame twice on this trip. Best qualify udon and broth. Loved assortment of tempura. This location had lunch special under $10 for small udon with one tempura. Very busy but efficiently running. Can’t wait to go back!

Quick, delicious, and seriously impressive. This cafeteria-style tempura and udon spot delivers some of the freshest noodles I’ve had, with incredibly flavorful broths and curry. The tempura is hands down the best I’ve tried. It’s light, crispy, and perfectly cooked. It’s fast without feeling rushed, which makes it perfect for a quick bite that still feels satisfying. I’ve already been back a few times and will definitely keep coming back!

Took my Mommy Dearest to Chinatown to get her hair and nails done. After that she wanted to have Udon noodles. And I remembered Muragame Udon is nearby and since I haven't ventured out to at this location before. I had the number 1 Nikutama and Mommy Dearest had the number 3 Beef with dashi broth and of course some tempura goodness on the side. The portion size is filling and the flavor was spot on. Perfectly balanced broth and not overpowering. The noodles have a great bounce to it. The restaurant is busy but luckily for us we went after the lunch rush so we didn't have to wait much. Mommy Dearest commented how she remembered the lines is always a mile long and out the door at the Waikiki location. This was when she worked in Waikiki. The Downtown location is clean and organized and the staff are wonderful. Can't wait to go back soon. Only thing sucks is the parking.

The udon here is incredibly fresh and delicious — perfectly chewy and flavorful. The fried chicken is super crispy and juicy, definitely a must-try! The service is quick, and even though the line can get long, it moves fast. Great food, great value, and always satisfying! 🍜🍗✨
