Maru Sushi Hawaii
About
An Intimate Slice of Japan in Kakaʻako
Stepping into Maru Sushi Hawaii feels like stumbling upon a quiet, well-guarded secret in the heart of Honolulu. Far from the tourist-heavy sprawl of Waikiki, this minimalist counter-service gem focuses on the purity of Edomae-style sushi. The atmosphere is hushed and reverent, dominated by the rhythmic sound of a chef’s knife slicing through perfectly aged nigiri, punctuated only by the occasional clink of sake cups.
Craftsmanship Behind the Counter
Chef Takeshi Kawasaki brings a rigorous technical standard to the Honolulu dining scene. Here, the experience is dictated by the season. You won’t find a sprawling menu of California rolls; instead, expect a progression of meticulously sourced fish—often flown in directly from Japan’s Toyosu Market. The shari (sushi rice) is seasoned with a distinct red vinegar blend that provides a warm, savory undertone, balancing the delicate sweetness of the fresh catch.
What to Expect
The space is exceptionally small, designed for those who want to watch the craft up close. Because seating is so limited, reservations are essentially mandatory, and the intimate setting means you’ll be sharing the quiet intensity of the room with just a handful of other patrons. A minor quirk to keep in mind: the minimalist interior means sound travels easily, so it’s better suited for a focused gastronomic journey than a boisterous group celebration. If you appreciate the nuance of temperature control on your fish or the subtle zing of freshly grated wasabi root, this is the destination to prioritize in Oʻahu.

Amazing experience with quality food. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The attention to detail of everything from the service to the food made this the highlight of our visit to Oahu.

Couldn't get a reservation to Sushi Sho so I tried this place out and I was not disappointed. Everything about an omakase experience was found here. The service was amazing as well. Well worth the price.

This was the best omakase meal I have ever had. I have had several omakase meals in San Francisco and Los Angeles and this was just next level. Everything apart from one dish, the albacore, came directly from Japan. Every other party at the dinner was late, so we had the chance to chat with the chefs and servers a little bit at the beginning of the meal which was very cool. They also gave us some complimentary drinks and bites for waiting. If you are looking for the top of the top of the top of the line, this is it.

One of the best omakases!! Had our own private room and attendant. In a very unassuming building. Price point is high obviously, but so so worth it. We had the best time here and will definitely be back on our next trip!

This might be hands down the best omakase experience I’ve ever had. Usually there’s always one or two dishes that I’m not impressed with, but every dish was extremely detail oriented and melt in your mouth delicious. The rice was just so perfect! The staff were attentive and kind. It was also nice to be surrounded by other nice guests from around the world. I would 1000 percent come back and highly recommend it. It was worth $300 per person. I don’t have a lot of photos, but pictures will never do it justice.

This was my first time to this restaurant and my first omakase experience. The space is small, but very comfortable. The staff were helpful and friendly and provided useful tips to help guide those less experienced with some of the traditions through this amazing meal. The sushi was nearly all sourced from Japan (with the exception of the abalone). I enjoyed every part of this meal and experience!

Great attention to details. the seasoning for each course was carefully considered. Amazing experience. The sushi counter interior design could be better. It was too wide. The chef had to reach all the way out to deliver the pieces.

Amazing food! Amazing Amazing Amazing!!! The best sushi I have ever had. He is a Michelin Star Chef. Its a very small place, so you need to make reservations in advance and make sure you not late. You have to park on the lot on Kalakaua, and next to the Assisted Living complex. You need to be heading makai (aka toward the ocean) and it will be on the right. Check out the pictures and you will see how amazing the food is! The service is 5 stars!!
