A Slice of Mexico in Honolulu

When the humidity hits the pavement in downtown Honolulu, Margaritas offers a cool, salt-rimmed escape. This is not a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a lively, high-energy spot where the sound of clinking glasses and reggaeton hits you the moment you cross the threshold. The decor leans into traditional Mexican motifs, creating a vibrant contrast to the tropical backdrop of the island.

The Flavor Profile of the Islands

The kitchen leans heavily into bold, familiar staples, with their carne asada standing out for its genuine, charred-on-the-grill finish. You will find that the salsa carries a legitimate kick, a refreshing departure from the toned-down versions often found in tourist-heavy zones. It is the kind of food that demands a cold drink, and they deliver with a namesake cocktail menu that leans generous on the tequila pour.

What to Expect When You Arrive

The space carries an unrefined, authentic charm. Because it sits in such a high-traffic urban corridor of Honolulu, finding a parking spot can be a bit of a localized sport, so arrive with a bit of patience. The acoustics can get loud during the dinner rush—it is a social space designed for groups catching up over steaming plates of fajitas rather than quiet, intimate conversation. If you are looking for a spot that feels like a neighborhood hangout rather than a curated experience, this is your place.

Really enjoyed this place. We came in just a few minutes before closing and they still welcomed us in, which I truly appreciated. The food was really good, everything tasted fresh and full of flavor. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sides were great as well. Service was friendly and the whole experience felt relaxed and welcoming. Definitely a spot I’d come back to.

Tried out their Happy hour items: Lychee Margarita and the Shrimp Ceviche Tostada. The margarita was a bit of a miss for me; it’s extremely sweet. If you prefer a spirit-forward cocktail, this might not be your move, but it's a win for those who love a dessert-style drink. The Shrimp Ceviche Tostada is definitely a fusion dish—it’s packed with pineapple, so be warned if you aren't a fan of fruit in your savory dishes. That said, the shrimp portion was generous and the ingredients felt fresh. The atmosphere is clean and organized, though the playlist was strictly country music, which seemed to suit the tourist clientele. Also, note that chips and salsa are an extra charge here. Great for visitors, but as a Californian looking for something more traditional, I likely won’t be back

We have been here a handful of times when we’re in Waikīkī and I have been remiss at leaving a review. If you have not tried Margarita’s restaurant, RUN don’t walk!! Mexican food lovers unite!! This time I had 1) the shrimp taco. It is full of flavor, juicy shrimp veggies, onions pico. It is an endless pallet of yummy shrimp fajita flavors on a bed of corn tortilla. It is phenomenal. 10 out of 10. 2) the pork belly taco. Pineapple slaw on top. Need I say more? Veritable goodness. We always get fish tacos, which are so GOOD, but they were out 😭 so I’m glad I ventured out!! right before we were done, they got fish tacos, so we had to have one! This is open air seating so there’s a bit of traffic noise, but I don’t care!! Get those tacos!!! 🌮 Can’t wait to come back for fajitas and nachos. Enjoy!!! -John 3:17

Great spot for lunch. The street tacos were fresh and flavorful with well-seasoned meat, warm corn tortillas, and great toppings. The margaritas were refreshing and balanced, not overly sweet. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere made the experience even better. Would definitely come back.

The place chosen was one he went to years ago - Margaritas on Sheridan St. Figured it's time to try it again. For her it was a steak burrito; he had chicken taco birra. Appetizer was chicken quesadilla. Overall, not great, just good. It is a place where it's a nice get together place with small plates, good beer and lively conversation with friends. That is how it was when he went to fetch the meal.

Came here for happy hour on a Friday - super deals. The food was all well made - for fresh fruit margaritas, get the beautiful purple dragonfruit, and try the sweet dairy-free horchata. We had nachos to start - heaped with queso, beans, & pico. Delicious chicken flautas. Enjoyed the three tacos on the happy hour menu, which were each richly seasoned and packed full. The dinner menu tacos are twice as large. Churris are served fresh, hot, and crispy.

I’ve been here a few times already. It’s a convenient location because it’s close to Walmart. They recently changed their menus and we were there for a good Taco Tuesday special, but ended up getting a few different things because they didn’t have the same special anymore. —Taco Tuesday special is $1 Off tacos—. We were greeted and seated without a wait, but this place does get busy in the evening. We got the chips & salsa, steak quesadilla, Birria Chipotle Chicken Tacos +$5 Spanish rice & beans, and Nachos. If you’re going to order chips and salsa you might wanna try the nachos instead. It’s a big portion and perfect for sharing! The Spanish rice was not very flavorful and I didn’t like it but the beans were okay.cI liked the amount of cheese inside the Birria Chipotle Chicken Tacos, but I prefer beef. I did really like the chips and salsa and nachos so I recommend those! There’s no ac, kind of like an open air seating with fans. We walked, but there’s valet parking available or parking at Walmart across the street.

Went to Margarita's for dinner on a Saturday night. There was a fair amount of people, and we got seated right away. The atmosphere was chill, relaxed, and fun. The food and drinks were alright. I would say 3.5 stars. The portion size wasn't as much as other Mexican restaurants and taste was average. However, we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Good place for a date night or to meet up with friends!

It was an awesome experience at this location. Here at the island for several days to celebrate a birthday and this location was vibrant, everyone was having a great time and food & drinks were excellent. The staff and servers were super friendly and we loved their vibe. Definitely somewhere we might go to a couple a times while we are here. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for some Mexican food and delicious drinks.

This is the second time coming here having given it some time to iron out the issues. We were totally impressed and came here for drinks on a Saturday evening. The space is bigger than when we first went in years ago. Service was great and attentive. The drinks were good and well prepared with just the right amount of alcohol. The food was tasty. It was nice to see that the restaurant had many patrons to keep them afloat. We will definitely be coming back to try other items.
