A Taste of Island Comfort

When you find yourself wandering through the lush, emerald-green hillsides of the Manoa valley, there is a specific kind of hunger that only a traditional plate lunch can satisfy. Manoa Bar-B-Que stands as a cornerstone of the neighborhood, serving up the kind of no-frills, heavy-hitting portions that define local Honolulu dining. The air inside is thick with the sweet, charred aroma of teriyaki chicken hitting a hot flat-top grill, a scent that signals you are in the right place for a proper meal.

The Signature Local Experience

This is not a place for white tablecloths or quiet contemplation. The atmosphere is bustling and casual, characterized by the sound of sizzling meat and the steady clatter of take-out containers being packed for the lunch rush. It is best suited for students, hikers coming down from the nearby trails, or anyone needing a reliable, carb-heavy recharge. Their signature BBQ mix—often featuring a combination of teriyaki beef, boneless chicken, and short ribs—is a masterclass in local flavors. The meat is marinated until it reaches a deep, mahogany color, offering that perfect balance of salty, sweet, and smoky profiles that locals expect.

Know Before You Go

One minor quirk to keep in mind is that the space is compact and popular, meaning seating can become a hot commodity during the peak noon hour. Parking in the surrounding Manoa area can be just as tight as the dining room, so arriving slightly before or after the traditional lunch window is a pro move for those looking to grab a quick bite. If you are seeking a genuine glimpse into the daily culinary habits of Oahu residents, far removed from the tourist-heavy Waikiki circuit, this spot captures that spirit with every scoop of macaroni salad.

Much better than what is available on the Mainland. Great service. Extensive menu. Food is great and at a very reasonable price for these days. Took a friend from the Mainland for lunch, and he was very impressed with the flavor and the price for a mini BBQ chicken. My wife had the same and it was very tasty. I had the cold ginger chicken and it was well prepared with a very tasty sauce. I went back twice that week for the mini BBQ chicken. The mac salad is up to Island standards. Parking can get crowded, but at least there is a free parking lot. No restroom in house, but there is one in the complex that you can get the code for the door.

Manoa Barbeque is small place you might have overlooked but the food holds it own with other more familiar places like L&L or Konas etc. they have a slicer and a grinder so they can serve more fresh cuts and burgers but also have a classic local flavors and deli restaurant environment that reminds me of when I was a keki. Ask to try their non sweetened ice tea.

Never disappointed whenever I see an L&L. I can’t resist the good old loco moco. The perfectly prepared beef patty, rice, and egg over easy that’s covered in gravy. The service is always quick and smooth. You won’t regret a stop here 🤤

Ordered beef stew. There were four pieces of meat which is rather standard. However, one piece was all fat with tiny bits of meat embedded which I tossed out. The other three pieces were mainly fat for which I got about one piece of meat from. What I got is what most other places trim off and toss as scrap. Although meat fat is expected, no person wants to chew and swallow the amount of fat in my stew. It’s call beef stew, not fat stew. It’s not right to do this to people. Go to Grace’s and see what beef stew should look like.

Great experience. Called ahead and ordered about 5 minutes before arriving and by the time we got there it was ready. I got a “mini” size Loco Moco and it was absolutely delicious. Wife got the “mini” short rib plate. Also excellent. Great food served fast. Can’t ask for more

This is a great location! The newly opened location is so clean and welcoming and as usual offers large portions of great food. Prices remain acceptable compared to some of their neighbors which affords us great plate lunches at least once or twice a week. They serve roast Turkey, our most favorite plate lunch throughout the year. Thank you L&L for keeping it affordable for us seniors.
