A Modern Take on Island Traditions

Mana + Pua brings a refined, contemporary energy to the heart of Honolulu’s bustling food scene. Far from the typical grab-and-go spots, this kitchen elevates the humble steamed bun into a culinary centerpiece. The scent of aromatic ginger and toasted sesame greets you the moment you step inside, cutting through the humid island air. It is the kind of place where locals congregate for a quick, savory lunch that feels deeply grounded in local ingredients.

The Art of the Pua

The menu centers on handcrafted bao buns, featuring fillings that rotate based on seasonal availability across Oahu. The signature char siu pork is a standout, boasting a sticky, sweet-and-savory glaze that pairs perfectly with the pillowy, cloud-like dough. Each bun is steamed to order, ensuring the texture remains soft and springy—never gummy. If you enjoy a bit of heat, keep an eye out for their house-made chili oil, which adds a complex, numbing spice that elevates the pork’s natural richness.

What to Expect

The space is minimalist and efficient, favoring sleek lines and high-top seating that encourages a fast-paced, social dining flow. Be aware that the space is compact; during the peak lunch rush, you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with the downtown crowd, and finding parking nearby requires a bit of patience. Despite the squeeze, the staff maintains a high level of hospitality, making it an ideal pitstop for professionals or curious visitors looking for a bite that feels both innovative and authentically rooted in Honolulu culture.

Update April 2026 : Still a lovely restaurant with a welcoming, classy-yet-casual bar. Comfortable seating, and food that really is worth ordering. Most recently, the Salade Niçoise with its fresh-caught, seared tuna, and the cauliflower in a mild yogurt-curry sauce were winners. May 2025 : Beautiful food that in fact actually tastes good. We got various fish dishes, of which sashimi, Caesar salad with seared ahi, and the scallops, and all three preparations on the seafood were fresh and spot-on. The French fries are crisp and hot, though a bit on the bland side, and the sauce, which was described on the menu as the house ketchup, was strange, more like a sweet romesco sauce. The fish spread is creamy and spreadable, bread is good quality and toasted, the cocktails are excellent. Regardless, the fish was perfect for our Cave de Lugny Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling wine from France. Very pleasant environments that encourages people to appreciate spending time with one another, be it at a table, or at the spacious bar. Service was competent, friendly, and lacking a bit of professionalism, at least for a waitress, but it’s hard to but this is only one visit, and it’s worth returning to this casual-elegant restaurant

I have given this establishment several chances and unfortunately it gets worse every time. I went once for lunch, once for an early dinner, and twice for happy hour over the course of the last year. Every time I went it was at an off hour (between 2 and 4:30pm) where the restaurant was literally empty or had one other table at most. I generally try to give places and people the benefit of the doubt, but each time I had a negative experience getting seated. My first visit I was ignored for about 5 minutes and every other time the hostess aggressively asked if I had a reservation and seemed perturbed I did not. I would understand this on a Friday night, but it's not too hard to fight for a table on a Thursday at 3:45 pm. My most recent visit was last week after seeing an instagram post (attached) encouraging people to bring their dogs to happy hour. The angry bartender that seemed irritated with our presence seated us and when we inquired about happy hour she seemed further irritated we didn't pick a seat at the bar. It's perfectly reasonable to put happy hour at the bar only, but they should state that in their advertisements and on their menu or inquire while seating people. Every other establishment at SALT has happy hour throughout the entire restaurant (Moku, Pitch, etc.). Also, why would you encourage people to bring their dogs to happy hour if you're sitting on a bar stool? It's not fun having a dog 4 feet below you. Once seated at the bar, we ordered from the attached menu. The beer was warm and we weren't informed of the cocktail special until we overheard the bartender telling a group that came in about 20 minutes after us. The atmosphere and environment was so harsh that we finished our fries, venison burgers and fish bites and left within 30-40 minutes of entering. As much as I think their food is overall pretty good, I will not be coming back to this establishment since I feel like my existence perturbs the staff.

Walked into a nearly empty restaurant at 5, to immediately be asked, “did you make a reservation?” No greeting, no discussion of happy hour, just the wait staff bothered about that two people who came for happy hour. After asking the waitress about the happy hour menu advertised on Instagram, we learned happy hour is only at the bar and the Instagram menu is outdated, and there is no happy hour cocktail. The food was fine but inconsistent. The drinks were a $12 glass of wine from a cheap bottle and $6 less than chilled Heineken. Mana + Pua is a great looking restaurant in a fantastic location with a staff that fails to deliver on food, drink, and service. I’ll go back in a year.

Service and atmosphere are wonderful. Unfortunately, it seems the kitchen needs some assistance. The scallop dish is now small bay scallops. The Bolognese was unseasoned and pasta cooked improperly, and the crab shrimp roll uses imitation crab chopped in large chunks with store bought chips. Saving grace was the service team being amazing and the Lilikoi cheesecake will bring us back.

The world food tour duo stopped in at Mana + Pua on the second floor of SALT. It’s a very open space, like a covered lanai. We arrived a little early and, being the first diners of the evening, had our choice of tables. We chose a table for two along the rail, nearest the bar. We were overlooking Vein and The Boiling Crab. We felt like cocktails instead of a bottle of wine. We wanted gin & tonics, but I didn’t see our preferred gins. They had two Mexican gins from Condesa, so I asked for one made with the Condesa London Extra Dry ($20) and another with Bombay ($20). The Mexican gin was nice …. A new gin to add to my home bar. We started with the Duck Fat Frites ($14) and the Antipasti Kau Kau Board ($50). The fries were sprinkled with dill, which is kind of weird (to me, who doesn’t like dill). The antipasti board was a work of art and was enough for four people. A large board was covered with five pieces of sourdough toast, a sweetish red pepper dip, slices of zucchini, wedges of gold and red beets, cherry tomatoes, green and black olives, prosciutto, salami, pieces of red onion and carrots, and wedges of kabocha with black skin. We boxed the leftovers and ordered our entrees. We ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese ($30), Mushroom Ricotta Ravioli ($30), and Fire-Kissed Brussels ($10). The ravioli and blistered cherry tomatoes sat in a portobello cream sauce … It was fine but I wished for a bit more mushroom flavor. The pappardelle were excellent, if a bit spicy. There was a chili crunch which added zing to the dish. The brussels sprouts was fine; we thought balsamic would have added to the overall flavoring. The restaurant wasn’t very busy and service was leisurely. We saw empty tables at many venues. My fellow foodie was at SALT the night before and she said every place was packed. I think Mana + Pua is fine but the format is more suited for those looking for drinks and small plates versus those of us looking for more entrée options. Rating: 4.

Staff takes care of you like family. The cook designed a perfect menu pulling off every dish. Highly recommend, arguably some of the best food on island. Really should try it out!

We had an amazing experience at M + P. All the dishes were delicious, but the flatbread of the day (pomodoro + pineapple + pepperoni + hot honey) was decadent. Hopefully they add this to the menu permanently. The dessert was also spectacular. Clam chowder was 10/10. Will 100% come back.

I understand this is a new restaurant but I don’t think they’re in any place to be open right now aside from the bar and pupus. We came super early for dinner and they were already out of the dish I wanted and my backup dish was not available in accordance with the menu so I was charged an extra $5 for a different version. The portions are extremely small for the price and didn’t have a lot of flavor. The menu is also incredibly confusing to read — there is no separation between small plates and entrees so you’re left to guess and hope for the best. Our server was kind and attentive and the ambiance was great but unfortunately I won’t be back any time soon until some significant kinks are worked out.

Overall a great experience, even better going there when it's not busy on the weekdays for lunch. All the food we got was great, but the scallops needed salt and their foccacia was a tad dense in the caprese. The ambiance is great, completely outdoors so I was able to take my pup along in his carrier with no issue 🐾 and he had a fun time being able to people watch since the restaurant is located on the upper level.
