A Taste of Thailand in East Honolulu

Located in the heart of the Hawaii Kai shopping district, Maile's Thai Bistro serves as a reliable local favorite for those craving bold, aromatic Southeast Asian cuisine. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, making it a go-to spot for families finishing a day at Sandy Beach or locals grabbing a reliable weekday dinner.

Signature Spice and Preparation

The kitchen, led by Chef Maile, focuses on high-quality ingredients that bring out the distinct heat and brightness of traditional Thai profiles. The Drunken Noodles are a standout, featuring wide rice noodles tossed in a savory sauce that packs enough chili heat to wake up the senses. If you prefer something lighter, the fresh spring rolls offer a crisp contrast to the richer, coconut-milk-based curries that define the menu. The aroma of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves greets you the moment you walk through the doors, grounding the experience in genuine regional flavor.

The Local Dining Rhythm

The dining room maintains a lively hum, often filled with the chatter of regulars. While the floor plan is efficient, be prepared for a bit of a squeeze during the peak weekend dinner rush; the popularity of this neighborhood anchor means tables turn quickly. Parking in the surrounding lot can occasionally require a lap or two, but the proximity to the Koko Marina area makes it a convenient stop for anyone traversing the southeastern coast of Oahu. It is a no-frills, flavor-forward destination that prioritizes the plate over unnecessary theatricality, providing a consistent, satisfying meal every time.

Thanksgiving Eve 2025: Had to make a Costco run so we came here for lunch. Green Papaya Salad (3 stars) with 5 pieces of green long bean and several grape tomato halves; Spring rolls (3 stars) with lots of fried crunch but not much filling and witty/browning pieces of mint; Penang curry ordered medium spicy delivered mild spicy with slivers of beef (3 stars) and way more sauce than featured veg/meat; Shrimp pad Thai (4 stars) with the best flavoring and generous shrimp serving, the less fresh looking pieces of bean sprout hold me back from giving this a 5. Service was friendly and attentive. Bathroom/storage area corridor make this place feel less inviting. ⏰5 years ago: Felt like having some Thai so we ventured to the east side. We got the green papaya and long rice salads and shared a red curry and pad thai. The green papaya salad was shredded fine and included some crunchy green bean and tomato slices and included ground peanut topping on the side. The long rice salad reminded me of a spicier, tangier thinner chicken long rice. I was surprised it came out warm. The red curry sauce was pleasantly spiced and oh so creamy and lovely over jasmine or sticky rice. The pad thai was one of the best I’ve ever had. The texture of the noodle and veggie toppings were so nicely balanced. We mixed ours up before digging in.

Food was good- service was not. Our waitress didn’t explain anything on the menu. We asked her what was good and she told us to just look at the menu to what had icons. We asked her what was popular and she told us to just look at the last page- the dishes with the photos are popular. Would not share anything else. The food took 40 minutes to come out. You might think that it’s because the restaurant was busy- it wasn’t. We were one of 5 tables in the restaurant. She didn’t check on us, and when we asked for takeout boxes when we were done she just dropped the check, didn’t care to ask if we wanted dessert. It was myself and my husband (2 person party), and she added on auto gratuity. Never eaten at a restaurant that that did that for a 2-person party. For this price for Thai food, you would expect better service. Next time, I’ll go to a restaurant that actually serves you and brings food out in a timely manner.

If you order your food to go, it won’t contain any meat despite paying for it (most protein selections are an additional charge). I’ve frequented this restaurant many times and have dined in and ordered to go. On numerous occasions my food to go did not contain any meat despite my order stating my protein selections. This is occurring more frequently hence why I’m writing a review rather than letting it slide like I have before. I’ve tried calling them and they don’t answer or they pick up and immediately hang up without greeting. It’s relatively basic Thai food but the only option in the area but not the quality is just terrible. The actual restaurant is nice inside and perhaps if you dine in, they’ll actually make your food right

Malie’s Thai Bistro is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels warm, cozy, and welcoming — like you’re about to enjoy a home-cooked meal in Thailand. The flavors are incredible. Every bite tastes fresh, balanced, and beautifully seasoned. The creamy coconut soup was rich yet light, packed with mushrooms and herbs, and perfectly comforting without being heavy. You can really taste the quality ingredients and care in the cooking. Service was friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind — they make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. If you love authentic Thai food with heart, this place is a must. I will definitely be coming back again and again! 🌿🍜

Casual atmosphere and menu is large so everyone can get what they want from chicken wings, spring rolls, pad thai noodles, salad and 3 curry sauces. The mango sticky rice dessert is delicious. The curry sauce is tasty, but wish there were more chicken and vegetables in the dish. Liked that there was jasmine, sticky and brown rice selections. The bar area was very busy and restaurant is pretty loud but you can still talk. Happy hour menu selection and prices are good.

Maile's used to be the place to go for Thai food, and maybe it still is. However, my last few DoorDash experiences have been less than stellar. Most recently, I ordered Pad Kee Mao with extra chicken. First off, there was not extra chicken. The noodles outnumbered the chicken by a mile, I think there was maybe 1/4 of a breast worth of meat. The noodles looked like the cook was mad at them. They were broken and way overcooked, almost to the point of mush. There was hardly any flavor in the dish, and the basil was nowhere to be found. I even asked for it hot, and there was next to no spice in it at all. It definitely seems like they treat DoorDash orders like they don't care. They didn't even include chopsticks or napkins. Maile's has definitely dropped the ball as of late, and I would consider other options like Thai Valley Cuisine in Kalama Valley. They're not the friendliest, but they cook like they care.

There is no other place like Maile’s Thai on O’ahu.. They have good food..like good food. There is Thai food and then there is THAI FOOD. Few places that can compete. They have a well equipped bar and nice people. And an atmosphere that is modern and pleasant. I have been to at least 10 other Thai places on O’ahu, and this place always keep me coming back. I am from Las Vegas and this is the only Thai restaurant that I could imagine surviving the strip. Worth the visit. They have spice challenges that will make your mouth regret itself.

Some of the best tasting rhai food around. Prices are a little steep, but for the quality and service, it was worth it. Chicken wings were good and not overdone. The wonton soup with bacon flavor was awesome. And the glass noodle salad had a lot of flavor. Portions were great for the price also. There are not too many thai restaurants on this side of the island, so it's definitely worth going here if you're looking for good Thai food.

This place totally surprised me in an amazing way. I heard great things from other locals and I love authentic Thai food. I know how epic it can truly be, but don't ever expect a game changer when I try new places. This place doesn't just change the game... it's got its own. It's so, so, so unassuming... everything we had was incredible. They do a caprese that puts Italian restaurants to shame. The fried chicken appetizer... just wow! That sauce... I need it in my pantry. The service was awesome... it was busy and they had some less then desirable customers and were handling all of it with total grace. Definitely try this place, you won't be sorry. And please do be extra kind to everyone working there 💞💞
