Sip Tropical Classics Overlooking Waikiki

Positioned right on the edge of the Pacific, this open-air watering hole is the quintessential stop for anyone wanting to plant their feet in the sand of Waikiki Beach. The atmosphere is perpetually buzzing, fueled by the crashing sound of the surf and the gentle hum of live local musicians performing acoustic sets against the backdrop of Diamond Head.

The Royal Mai Tai Legacy

Known globally as the birthplace of the Royal Mai Tai, the bar serves a version of the classic rum cocktail that balances a deep, nutty orgeat profile with fresh lime and a signature float of dark rum. It is a potent, icy ritual that pairs perfectly with the salt-kissed air of the Honolulu coast.

What to Expect

This is a destination for the casual cruiser. Don't expect white-tablecloth service; the vibe is relaxed, breezy, and often crowded. If you arrive during the golden hour, be prepared for a bit of a shuffle to snag a seat with an unobstructed ocean view. The menu keeps things straightforward with elevated pupus—think crispy coconut shrimp or kalua pork sliders—that satisfy those mid-afternoon hunger pangs without distracting from the main event: the sunset.

While the service can get snappy during the heavy afternoon rush, the payoff is an authentic Honolulu experience that feels less like a tourist trap and more like a necessary rite of passage for every visitor landing on Oahu.

Honestly, is there a better life experience than having a Mai Tai on Waikiki beach as the sun goes down? This bar has been excellent for decades. They have many variations on Mai Tais - I recommend the White Wash. The food menu is short, but enough variety. The truffle fries are delicious and seem like 4 whole potatoes. The line absolutely backs up in the evening, so be prepared to wait.

Great bar at the Royal Hawaiian. Of course you have to get the Mai Tai but don't sleep on the Piña Coladas. Iconic spot beautiful view of Waikiki and Diamond Head. 4 drinks plus tip $98😬

The best Mai Tais on the island. They are boozy and taste good. At $20 a drink, it's about the same as many other places offering Mai Tais but you'll get your money's worth. I really like the Vic's 44. It's the least sweet. But our group really likes the white wash and original as well. The truffle fries are absolutely delicious. They go well with the drinks. Nice vibes and could be a great place to watch sunset while you enjoy a drink.

Ocean right in front of you, soft breeze, live music in the background the vibe is effortlessly perfect. The drinks were amazing, So photogenic, but not just pretty ,perfectly balanced, fruity, smooth, and easy to sip. Service was friendly, super chill but attentive. Honestly loved everything the vibe, the service, the drinks. If you’re in Honolulu, this is a must and I’d definitely come back again.

The Mai Tai Bar establishment offered us a pleasant coastal ambiance with music and is reasonably priced providing us with a relaxed Hawaiian setting for a meal. The wine selection and cocktails are great and the cuisine is of high quality. I recommend this restaurant; however, please be aware that due to its popularity, wait times may be experienced. It’s worth the wait. If you go at the right time you may get a seat right in the beach.

The Mai Tai Bar inside The Royal Hawaiian Hotel is iconic for a reason. You’re literally on the sand at Waikīkī, the ocean is right there, the vibes are immaculate and yes — the Mai Tais are absolutely amazing. I ordered the Whitewash, and honestly… chef’s kiss. Perfectly balanced, smooth, and strong in the best way. I don’t even remember everything that was in it (there was a double float of something magical), but trust me — it delivers. This is exactly the kind of drink you come here for. Now, why four stars instead of five? The prices are a little wild, even by Waikīkī beach standards. Drinks are pricey (expected), but the food is pretty average with well-above-average prices, which knocks it down a notch. My advice: Come for the drinks and the atmosphere Enjoy the beachside setting Eat elsewhere No shade at all — this place does what it does best very well. If you’re looking for a classic Waikīkī moment with a great cocktail in hand and the ocean at your feet, Mai Tai Bar delivers. Just budget accordingly and plan your food plans elsewhere. IMO Cheers to beachside sipping!

If we’re being honest, this rating is 100% about the cocktails, the beachfront setting, and the service — because the food prices are… wild. That said: the cocktails? Top tier. I had their spin on a Trader Vic’s ‘44 and the Whitewash with the foam on top, and both were beautifully balanced, strong, and well executed. Exactly what you want when you’re sipping with your toes practically in the sand. The location is unbeatable — literally cocktails on the beach — and it’s especially lovely around sunset. Service was attentive, friendly, and never rushed, which matters at this price point. Now… the reason this is four stars instead of five: The food pricing is just not it. When chicken strips are pushing $30, I have to draw the line. Unless money truly doesn’t matter to you, I’d skip the food and focus on what they do best. Bottom line: Highly recommend for cocktails on the beach, especially at golden hour. Amazing drinks, great vibes, excellent service. Just maybe eat somewhere else first — or don’t look at the prices. 😅🍹

Amazing and iconic bar at the Royal Hawaiian hotel next to the beach. Both inside and outside is beautiful. Again, iconic is the word to use. I had the Mai Wai cocktail, which was very tasty. They also serve non alcoholic beverages. Staff was super friendly, cannot wait to visit again. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely table right next to the beach - loved the people watching along with our delicious lobster rolls and taro chips. A cold athletic beer was perfect - incredible service! So good we went back day two!
