Mahina and Sun's
About
A Modern Take on Honolulu Heritage
Stepping into Mahina & Sun's, you are immediately greeted by the hum of Waikiki energy filtered through a lens of sophisticated calm. Located within the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club, this dining spot captures the essence of 1960s Hawaii with its mid-century modern aesthetic and breezy, open-air design. It is the kind of place where the scent of locally sourced citrus and fresh-caught Pacific fish drifts from the open kitchen, blending perfectly with the nearby poolside chatter.
Honest Food from Local Harbors
Chef Erik Leong leads the charge here, focusing on a philosophy that prioritizes island-grown produce and sustainable seafood. You won't find imported filler; the menu is a rotating showcase of what is freshest at the docks that morning. The signature Whole Catch—often a crispy, ginger-scented snapper served family-style—is a sensory experience that demands you get your hands dirty. The flavors are bright and uncluttered, relying on high-quality ingredients like Maui onions and vine-ripened tomatoes to do the heavy lifting.
The Waikiki Pulse
The atmosphere is best suited for those looking to bypass the tourist traps in favor of a genuine, community-focused meal. It feels less like a hotel restaurant and more like a neighborhood clubhouse. Keep in mind that the acoustics can get a bit lively when the nightly live music starts near the pool, so if you are planning an intimate conversation, opt for a table tucked toward the back of the dining room. Whether you are grabbing a craft cocktail infused with local botanicals or settling in for a multi-course dinner, Mahina & Sun's offers a grounded, authentic taste of Honolulu that avoids the typical resort clichés.

The burger we had I think was the BEST Burger I've had in awhile. The drinks are reasonably priced...HH $12/Drink or Double-up for $14. $16/Singapore Sling and $14/Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary mix was delicious. Ian is a pretty cool bartender and very personable. We live here and enjoy coming here bc it's quiet considering it's Waikiki. I've only been during the day...but enjoyed the pool.

We had our "reception dinner" at Mahina & Suns, which is inside the Surfjack. I chose this restaurant because I had eaten there previously and every meal I've had before had been so delicious. I wanted a spacious restaurant where we would be provided with great service and we wouldn't have to compete with the large groups that were in town for graduation. Lisa, the restaurant manager, was great at communicating and helping me pick out the perfect menu for our 29 guests (pork lau lau, mahina bowl, rustic meatballs, ceviche, fried pickles, chicken milanese, pork lumpia, margherita pizza, green goddess salad). Lisa was so friendly and accommodating and had great suggestions. She was patient with me when I kept changing my mind for the dishes we wanted. She understood that, even though it was a post-wedding dinner, it wasn't a traditional reception dinner....we weren't doing toasts, first dances, cake cutting, etc....we just wanted to eat dinner together. She reserved the back of the restaurant for our group and it was perfect. The food was delicious, the atmosphere and the service was awesome (thank you, Alison!). While we were there we spent several afternoons chilling at the pool. The bartenders were so friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about drinks. Big shout out to Ian and Taylor!!

Great place to hangout with friends, family, partner, but also an awesome spot to drink all by yourself by the bar. The baristas and front staff were all nice and cheerful. Amazing happy hour menu from 11:30am-5pm, including cheap cocktail drinks ($8+), appies and mains. Tried their fish and chips. It has a great fish to breading ratio, juicy meat fish with light savoury breading. The ambience of the restaurant is boho chic and not too crowded, even during rush hours.

This is the only restaurant in Waikiki we have been making a point of visiting every time we are here - for ten years now. The food is inventive and delicious, as are the cocktails. Somehow we can always get a last-minute reservation and have even been lucky to do a walk-in on Valentine’s Day! From the current menu (2026), the smoked ahi spread is amazing! And we really enjoyed the whole fish. Our last visit here was with a toddler and the staff was extremely sweet and accommodating.

We had an outstanding meal here. The service was relaxed and leisurely in a good way. It helped us to slow down and enjoy a couple hours for our meal. We enjoyed a large sampling of the menu from the Green Goddess salad to start, to Pork Chop, to Chicken Melinasese, and Seared Ahi, to the Off the Hook. For Gluten Free: the Seared Ahi and Off the Hook were Gluten Free and delicious.

I didn't love it. The menu is smaller with a decent selection but I did think it was expensive for what you got. My fish was luke warm and also a little dry. The pizzas were all delicious but again for a thin crust pizza with a handful of toppings it was pricy. At the same time I do realize the tourist destination raises the prices. This restaurant is in the same place as the hotel pool and we got to watch some girls swim, which I found a bit odd for the restaurant atmosphere. The cocktail menu has some great drinks not unbelievably expensive. 10$ for a cocktail, 26$ for cocktail. The service was very good, we had an excellent server. Although the food took quite a while even thought the restaurant was not busy. The banana pudding was very good, the sweet potato cheese cake was not. Overall, I wont be back.

This restaurant inside Surf Jack Hotel is a chill spot to unwind. We tried their holiday season cocktail, which was good, and enjoyed the live music — the singer was excellent. A relaxed place to hang out and enjoy the vibe.

This establishment offers a truly distinctive experience within the region. The culinary and beverage selections were exceptional. The service was commendable, and our waiter demonstrated both professionalism and helpfulness. This was undoubtedly one of our most satisfying dining experiences here. The shareable fish platter is highly recommended.

We really like this restaurant—it has great vibes, a cute pool, and excellent service. The food comes in large portions and is nicely cooked. The chicken, in particular, is tender and flavorful. It’s also in a great location, within walking distance of the main street. They host lunch parties on Saturdays and often have live music with talented singers performing great songs.
