Freshness from the Honolulu Docks

At Maguro YA, the focus is singular: premium tuna. Situated in the heart of Honolulu, this spot strips away the excess of high-end sushi bars to prioritize the raw quality of Hawaii’s local catch. You will notice the difference the moment the platter hits the table—the deep, ruby-red hues of the ahi are stark against the simple plating, and the smell of the ocean is unmistakable.

A Local's Take on Ahi

While the menu is refined, the space remains refreshingly unpretentious. It is a place where you go specifically for the maguro don, which arrives with thick, buttery slices of sashimi draped over perfectly seasoned sushi rice. Chef-driven precision is evident in how they treat each cut; the texture is silky, clean, and entirely free of the metallic edge found in lesser-grade tuna.

The Practical Details

If you are planning a visit, keep in mind that this is a popular stop for those who truly prioritize their sashimi quality over flashy decor. The seating is efficient, and the room can hum with a busy, energetic buzz during the lunch rush. It is not a place for a quiet, long-winded business meeting, but it is exactly where you want to be if you have a craving for high-grade poke and sashimi that honors the local fishing tradition. Parking can be a bit of a challenge in this part of town, so factor in a few extra minutes to find a spot before you settle in for your meal.

Really lovely sushi restaurant with high quality fish. There’s paid parking in a parking lot next to the restaurant and also a mix of free and paid street parking nearby. The interior space has counter seating for 6-8 people and a few tables for larger parties. Reservations aren’t required, but are recommended if you want to get a seat at the sushi bar. They serve mainly teishoku sets and sushi - I pretty much just come here for the sushi. Service can be slow at times if you’re ordering raw fish since there’s usually just the owner doing the prep at the sushi counter. The fish are all fresh and this place has some of the best akami zuke that I’ve ever had. Other highlights are, depending on the season, tachuo (belt fish, a white fish with a very clean taste and bouncy texture), shima-aji (striped jack, lovely texture and slightly sweet), and amaebi (sweet shrimp, sweet and nice mochi-like texture). The sushi is comparable to high-end omakase spots without breaking the bank.

Just great food….thats what Maguro-ya is. The tamago was fluffy like a pillow and probably the best we’ve had and we have eaten a lot of tamago. The chef special nigiri for $45 and 12 pieces was delicious. Every piece was flavourful and nothing had a fishy taste, including the mackerel. The tempura was meaty and crunchy, yet didn’t feel heavy. Left feeling very satisfied!

One of the best sushi restaurants ever! We got the chef sushi assortment, and every piece tasted amazing. Also, make sure to get tonkatsu! It was so tender and moist inside but crispy outside. Friendly staffs with great customer service. Overall atmosphere felt very welcoming and clean. Would definitely be back!!
