Machete's Mean sandwiches
About
Big Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu
If you find yourself wandering through Honolulu near the intersection of North King and Dillingham, follow the scent of toasted bread and slow-roasted meats. Machete's Mean Sandwiches isn't about white-tablecloth pretense; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense shop designed for locals who want a serious meal. The interior is sparse and industrial, letting the heavy-duty press of their sandwich makers take center stage.
The Art of the Mean Press
The menu lives up to the name. Their signature sandwiches feature bread toasted to a golden, shattery crunch that gives way to tender, savory fillings. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite during a workday or refueling after a trip to the nearby harbor, these sandwiches are built for substance. You will notice the signature sizzle of the griddle as soon as you step through the door, a sound that promises a hot, hearty lunch.
What to Expect
Don't come here expecting a quiet café experience. It’s loud, active, and moves with the fast-paced energy of urban Honolulu. Parking can be a bit of a localized challenge given the high traffic in the area, so give yourself an extra five minutes to secure a spot. It’s the kind of place where the staff remembers your face, the music is turned up just high enough, and the food speaks for itself. It is a go-to for those who value portion size and flavor intensity over delicate presentation. If you appreciate a sandwich that requires two hands and leaves you comfortably full, this is your new spot in the city.

We stopped to get sandwiches to take on the airplane and now I wish we had discovered this place earlier in our trip. Absolutely delicious.

It’s been a while and I forgot just how good machetes sandwiches are. Their sandwich bread is made in house so always fresh and pillowy. Portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. It’s a refreshing change from some other places where you get less for more. Oh and you can preorder via the Chowhound app. They do offer delivery as well. It’s all take out- no indoor/outdoor seating. Staff was super nice. Parking - there’s street parking available but no guarantees. There’s a small lot on the backside of the building. I was able to park there because it was a quick pick up, but not sure if that’s official parking for machetes. But the parking attendant was cool about it.

Having been to Machete’s in Honolulu twice, I can confidently say that these are some of the best sandwiches I’ve had on island. It’s always a good sign to me when you see all the equipment front and center so you know the ingredients are fresh. It’s rare when you bite into a sandwich, that the BREAD stands out to you. But that’s exactly what I had here! Soft, fresh and hearty bread was far more of a centerpieces than expected. The meat and cheese was also excellent and tasty. Mayo and dressings were balanced well and I love shredded lettuce on my sandwiches! Staff was enthusiastic and friendly both times. Menu is not too overwhelming either. Value was very good for the island, and these are some large portions so maybe split with a friend! Will be back soon to try a new sandwich!
