A Taste of Local Honolulu Life

Stepping into Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii feels like arriving at a neighborhood cookout. Located in the heart of Honolulu, this spot captures the true spirit of local comfort food without the pretense of high-end resort dining. The air carries the savory, sweet aroma of shoyu-marinated proteins hitting a hot grill, mingling with the scent of steaming jasmine rice.

Menu Staples and Island Classics

The menu leans heavily into the quintessential plate lunch culture that defines Hawaii's culinary identity. You will find generous portions of crispy chicken katsu, tender kalua pork, and the ever-reliable teriyaki beef. These are served with the mandatory two scoops of rice and creamy macaroni salad—a combination that is non-negotiable for locals. The portions are substantial enough to power you through a day of surfing or a long afternoon at the office.

The Neighborhood Experience

This is a place built for efficiency and utility. It is ideal for workers grabbing a quick midday meal or families stocking up on affordable dinner options. While the space is compact and can get quite busy during the lunch rush, the staff moves with the precision of a seasoned kitchen crew. You might have to navigate a crowded sidewalk or compete for a spot in the modest parking area, but the trade-off is high-quality, authentic food that honors the traditions of Hawaii’s plantation-era roots. Whether you are a visitor looking to eat like a resident or a local craving a taste of home, this kitchen remains a reliable staple of the Honolulu food scene.

Konbu musubi with mochiko chicken bento (lunch box), bento “f” (spam, hotdog, teri beef, mochiko chicken) my favorite, grilled salmon plate, Teri beef plate all ono (delicious). I recommend phoning in your order because the food is so good they do sell out. Also, it’s cash only here.

Hidden gem near Sand Island and exactly the kind of place we never would have found without a little extra time before our flight. The second you walk in, you know it’s where the locals eat. No tables? Didn’t matter one bit. This was probably the best food we had all week in Hawaii. The loco moco was hands down the best of our trip and somehow also the best price we saw anywhere. The beef patties were clearly homemade and absolutely delicious, the eggs were cooked perfectly, and the fried rice was unbelievably good. Gravy- fire. Was it a little grungy looking inside? Sure. But the kitchen looked clean, the food came out hot and fresh, and honestly that just made us trust that it was going to be amazing. The kind of spot you remember long after the fancy tourist restaurants fade together. If you care more about incredible local food than trendy decor, don’t skip this place.

Great place for lunch...you guys gotta check this place out...ono grindz and great service. They have mini and regular plates. Ordered the mochiko and the Teri chicken and also the mochiko and grilled salmon plate. So yummy. Highly recommend this place. Mochiko chicken can be mild or spicy...I loved the mild flavor. Come and check this place out when you guys have time.
