About
A Taste of Laos in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Lao Asian Market is less about a formal dining experience and more about discovering the pulse of Southeast Asian home cooking right in the middle of urban Honolulu. This isn’t a polished, white-tablecloth establishment; it is a functional, no-frills neighborhood staple where the scent of fermented fish sauce, fresh lime, and toasted sticky rice dominates the air the moment you push through the door.
The Flavors of Home
The menu is a roadmap of Lao street food culture. Regulars flock here for the Nam Khao—a crispy coconut rice salad that balances textures perfectly, combining golden-fried rice balls with sour pork sausage, fresh herbs, and a generous squeeze of citrus. It’s vibrant, spicy, and uncompromising in its authenticity. You will also find shelves stocked with hard-to-find ingredients, from specialized chili pastes to bundles of fresh morning glory, making it a dual-purpose destination for both a quick lunch and stocking your own pantry.
The Local Pulse
Expect a compact, utilitarian space where the hum of the cooling units and the rhythmic chopping from the kitchen provide the soundtrack. Parking in this part of Honolulu can be a tight squeeze, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot. It is the kind of place where efficiency is prioritized over lingering, ideal for those who value genuine, bold flavors over elaborate service rituals. Whether you are looking for an expertly prepared papaya salad that actually carries a proper kick or you need to source ingredients for your own kitchen, this market remains an essential stop for the local community and food enthusiasts alike.

Nice little store that has the necessities for cooking home food. There are plenty of choices of ramen noodles to choose from too.

Small asian market focused primarily on Thai foods. Clean and well organized with rack in front of the store with commonly purchased items. The best market for fresh and pre-packaged items needed to make thai curries and satays. If you need fresh kaffir leaves, thai basil or galangal, this is your spot. Owner was helpful and friendly. Owners brother in-law was there that day and he was also very knowledgeable and helpful. Thank Cecil for the green curry secret. Will be back soon.
