L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Honolulu (Dillingham Blvd)
About
A Taste of Local Island Culture
Walking into an L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in Honolulu feels less like visiting a chain and more like stumbling into a neighborhood staple where the pace of life slows down. The air inside is thick with the savory, caramelized scent of teriyaki glaze hitting a hot grill, mingling with the subtle steam of mounds of white rice. It is the kind of place where locals head when they need comfort food that doesn't pretend to be anything other than exactly what it is: hearty, satisfying, and deeply tied to the island's plantation-era history.
The Plate Lunch Legacy
This is ground zero for the iconic Hawaiian plate lunch. The menu revolves around the classic combination of two scoops of sticky white rice, a generous scoop of macaroni salad, and your choice of protein. You’ll find the signature Chicken Katsu—panko-crusted and served with that unmistakable tangy katsu sauce—competing for attention with the slow-cooked Kalua Pork. The portions are substantial enough to sustain you through a long day of surfing or hiking.
What to Expect
While you won't find white-tablecloth service, you will find the soul of Honolulu’s casual dining scene. It is perfect for a quick, no-fuss lunch before heading to the beach or a late-night fix after a long shift. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you arrive during the peak lunch hour rush, as the line often stretches toward the door. Parking can occasionally be a bit tight depending on the specific spot you visit, but the trade-off is consistently prepared food that hits the spot every single time. It remains a cornerstone of the local culinary landscape, keeping the spirit of the traditional mixed plate alive for both residents and visitors alike.

This L&L restaurant by Costco Iwilei is the best of the many L&L's I've visited. The food is always well prepared, tasty, and nicely portioned. The restaurant is well kept, clean, and inviting. I've eaten here so often earning me numerous cash equivalent rewards with their loyalty program. The staff are always friendly and courteous reflecting how much they value their customer.... My go to faves: NY steak and garlic shrimp Pork Chop and gravy BBQ hamburger deluxe combo Musubi Breakfast Meat and eggs Grilled cheese (well done)

Came in and ordered Teriyaki beef Saimin, mini Loco Moco, Salmon burger with a side of fries, and a mini Chicken Katsu. Very delicious, the chicken was crispy, salmon was cooked well, noodles in the Saimin were not over cooked, and the Loco Moco was great! Highly recommend stopping in here! We dined in, the A/C could be a little bit colder inside.

Ordered 2 eggs with portuguese sausage and hash browns. Did not order rice. There were rice particles on the bottom and the eggs had a weird blue burnt color on it that the front lady said was the pan. If the pan does that, it may be a good idea to get a new one as this could be chemicals I do not desire on my food. As for the rice, it's just sloppy and almost feels like I'm eating someone else's leftovers. Do not recommend.

We enjoyed the food here. We ordered kalua pork and a cheeseburger with fries for my daughter. All of the food was delicious. They have a big menu, so there is something for everyone. The staff were very nice and our food came out quickly. The only downside is the roof was leaking near me when I sat down.

Colleague from the mainland who's never been to Hawaii requested, "I'd like to try local Hawaiian food." This is where my coworker (who's lived here 30+ years) and I took him. He ordered the Kalua Pork Lau Lau. He didn't care for it much-- but he appreciated the experience. My half curry shrimp and half fried shrimp (just get all curry shrimp) was nice. The breading on the fried shrimp had rocky bits around the edges that were a few shades beyond crunchy. But the strong curry batter for the unbreaded shrimp was fantastic and redeemed the meal. Ther French fries were excellent too.

It's an L&L, so you know what to expect. It took a little longer than usual to get the food, but it was tasty as normal. The cleanliness of the establishment was a bit below average and I'm surprised that their drink machine stated "one refill only" which was pretty oft-put. They did have several food choices available that are unique to this establishment, so it'll be worth a visit if you're already at Costco.
