A Pacific View of French Culinary Tradition

Positioned overlooking the turquoise waters of Waikiki Beach, La Mer stands as a landmark of sophistication in Honolulu. This is not a place for a hurried meal; it is a space designed for those who appreciate the slow, methodical pace of classical French gastronomy. As you step inside, the open-air design invites a gentle ocean breeze, carrying the faint, salt-tinged aroma of the Pacific, which contrasts beautifully with the refined scent of white linens and butter-poached seafood.

The Chef’s Commitment to Local Harvest

Under the direction of the culinary team, the menu leans into the 'Cuisine du Soleil' philosophy. You will find local Hawaiian ingredients treated with absolute reverence. The signature Onaga—a prized deep-sea snapper caught in island waters—often anchors the menu, paired with precise, buttery sauces that reflect generations of French technical training. Each plate is a study in color and geometry, meant to be examined as closely as it is tasted.

Refined Elegance in Waikiki

The atmosphere is hushed and reverent, making it a natural choice for anniversaries or moments requiring a quiet, polished backdrop. The room features dark wood accents and large, unobstructed windows that frame the sunset over Diamond Head. Be aware that the dress code is strictly enforced; it is one of the few places left where jackets are expected, adding a touch of old-world formality that feels increasingly rare in the casual beach culture of Oahu. You might find the service to be exceptionally attentive—almost telepathic—though the spacing between tables ensures that your conversation remains entirely private. For those seeking the pinnacle of Honolulu fine dining, this remains the undisputed standard.

Absolutely 3 Michelin star quality restaurant. If you love fine dining French food with a view, you will LOVE La Mer. The staff is outstanding and extremely knowledgeable. Every dish was on point and executed to perfection. Kudos to the Chef. If you go to Oahu, make a reservation here!

We paid 2000.00 for my wife, and I and a friend. We ordered the finest of food and drinks. But the food was disappointing. Not up to the standard im.use to. Im from a ultra wealthy family and we own major tech company's.. So I am use to expensive places. Place was beautiful but food bland. I was very disappointed and when I told my server it was blown off. Thats why I left 100 dollars on a 2007.89 bill. If she was polite and accommodating she would of gotten 600.00 easy. Maybe it was chefs off day. But I will never go back

How this rates under 5 stars is a mystery to me - this was without a doubt the best food and dining atmosphere experience of my life. I’ve been all over the world and been fortunate to be served many outstanding meals with impeccable service. La Mer wins. Above excellent service, food, atmosphere, and drinks. 5 stars across the board. Highly recommend the Menu du Soir with the vanilla soufflé!

Spectacular restaurant. I brought my mom here to celebrate an early Mothers Day and her birthday. We got their degustation tasting menu. Let me just say the food was amazing. We both felt the skill and effort put into each and every dish and thoroughly enjoyed eating them! We finished every single dish besides the cheese plate (sorry!). By the time we were done, we were there for 3:30 hrs! Definitely recommend this place for a special occasion.

Disappointed in the food. Roughly have the tasting menu was delicious and well done. However, the other half was in need of improvement. Specifically the steak dish. The steak was dry and flavorless. The service was top notch, the drinks were great, the view was fantastic. For roughly $500 a person it was hard to justify the cost. Sadly we enjoyed our meal at Roy’s the night before more than La Mer.

La Mer was an absolutely beautiful dining experience. The room is elegant and serene, with stunning décor and a classic fine-dining feel that immediately sets the tone. It was also the perfect place to watch a Waikiki sunset with a drink on hand and without the crowd. We loved the tasting menu, every course was refined, flavorful, and thoughtfully done. Our server was outstanding and even helped create a custom tasting menu for my husband, which made the night feel very personal and special. Exceptional food, polished service, and a truly memorable evening. One of the best meals we’ve had in Waikiki. Shoutout to Alec for making the night unforgettable!

We came here for a special engagement celebration, and the whole evening felt beautifully thoughtful. Gen, our server, guided us through each dish with such care and explained the chef’s vision like she was letting us in on a secret. The duck breast was rich (mine was a bit on the firm side), and the fish with its crackling, hot-oil-kissed skin was melt-in-your-mouth unforgettable. Even the simple things , like the seaweed-infused tableside bread as it felt unique and magical. It was such a memorable meal, start to finish.

Best fine dining in Honolulu…and all of Hawaii. We got the full 8 course meal and it was worth it, it was such a unique experience that I did not feel like I could get anywhere else. Dishes were thoughtful unique and well crafted. Delicious 😋 and I loved the wine choices. The cocktail was so smooth and flavorful. I will credit them for top notch service too PLEASE read their attire policy so that you aren’t turned down

A somewhat beautiful experience. I have been in the gastronomy industry for 22 years. I have never been told that I could not partake in the tasting menu because my wife and daughters were not ordering the tasting menu as well. What are we trying to pull here?🤔 No fault to the waiter(s) who was(were) nothing short of amicable and accommodating. However, I just felt that my family was being pressured into ordering the more expensive menu. I am fully aware of the workings of a kitchen brigade and it makes it easier for everyone to order a tasting menu so that there isn't that awkward waiting on the one person or people that did want it. I mean, it was my 40th birthday, guys. It was all I wanted. I will not be returning. Your servers saved the experience. God Bless you all. 🙏🏼

I had high expectations for La Mer given its reputation and the beautiful setting, but unfortunately, my experience fell far short—both in terms of food and service. The meal began with a rich and heavy amuse-bouche that felt more like a full appetizer than something to whet the appetite. The banana chip dish was visually creative, but the flavor was oddly off. Many of the courses that followed looked elegant but failed to harmonize in taste—the ingredients felt mismatched, and the combinations didn’t enhance each other. The lobster tasted quite ordinary, and the beef lacked the tenderness and depth of flavor you’d expect at this level. Dessert was one of the few highlights of the evening, but by then, the overall experience had already been underwhelming. The cheese course didn’t suit my palate, which is a matter of personal taste, but the rest of the dishes didn’t meet objective expectations for fine dining. Service was disappointing. A piece of ginger for a cocktail was accidentally dropped on the table, and instead of replacing it, the server placed it directly into my glass. Another garnish was given to the wrong guest and later retrieved and moved to the correct glass over ten minutes later. In a restaurant of this caliber, this kind of handling is simply unacceptable, both for hygiene and hospitality. To make things worse, the total bill for four people—with no wine pairing or additional alcohol beyond a few cocktails—came out to over $1,600. Given the average quality of the food and lapses in service, the experience did not justify the price. La Mer may offer a romantic atmosphere and elegant plating, but the execution fell short in nearly every other aspect. I truly wanted to enjoy it, but I left feeling disappointed.
