La Gelateria Hawaii
About
A Slice of Italy in Kaka'ako
Stepping into La Gelateria Hawaii feels like a sudden departure from the humid Honolulu air. You are greeted by the distinct, clean scent of fresh fruit and cream the moment you open the door. This isn't your standard scoop shop; it is a labor of love that prioritizes traditional Italian techniques, focusing on a texture that is impossibly silky and dense.
The Art of the Craft
The display case is a colorful spectrum of rotating flavors that reflect both Mediterranean roots and island inspiration. While the classics like rich dark chocolate and Madagascar vanilla are always on point, the real stars here are the tropical fruit sorbettos. They use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, ensuring that the passion fruit or lilikoi flavors possess a bright, acidic zing that feels harvested that morning.
What to Expect When Visiting
It is best to come here when you have a few minutes to linger. The space is intimate, and it is common to see regulars leaning against the counter having animated conversations with the staff. Because it is located in a bustling part of town, parking can occasionally turn into a game of musical chairs, but the payoff of a perfect scoop of salted caramel makes the hunt worthwhile.
Whether you are walking off a meal in the neighborhood or just looking for a cool-down treat after a day at the beach, this shop serves as a reliable anchor for dessert enthusiasts in Oahu. It is a quiet, reliable spot that values quality over speed, making it the perfect destination for a slow afternoon indulgence.

If you plan on sitting and having an ice cream. That’s not the place. Here you only grab the pre-ordered pint and go. Took us long time to get there and have the kids disappointed that we can’t sit and eat. Perhaps the ice cream is good, but definitely not a place to relax and have an ice cream!

The pineapple flavor added sour notes while the li-hing (salted plum) tastes salty. It was okay for being shave ice (it’s not ice cream like the others). Mint chocolate chip has tiny chips, Kona coffee is delicious. Chocolate fudge chunk might be my favorite, very rich and creamy!
