L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Honolulu (Kilauea Ave)
About
A Kahala Institution for Island Comfort
Stepping into this local staple off Kilauea Avenue, the air is thick with the savory aroma of teriyaki glaze and crispy fried chicken. For residents and visitors navigating the Kahala commercial district, this spot serves as the quintessential stop for a quick, no-frills meal that defines Hawaii’s culinary culture.
The Classic Plate Lunch Experience
This is where you go for the staples that built the brand’s reputation across the islands. The signature chicken katsu is consistently golden and crunchy, paired perfectly with the inevitable two scoops of white rice and a generous side of creamy macaroni salad. It is hearty, unpretentious food designed to sustain you through a long day of beach-hopping or commuting through Honolulu.
The Local Rhythm
The layout is functional and efficient, characteristic of a classic drive-inn. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you are visiting during the peak lunch hour, as the small parking area can get tight with the steady flow of locals picking up bulk orders. It is loud, busy, and moves at the fast-paced clip of a kitchen that never stops grilling. It is best for those who value speed and reliable, heavy-hitting comfort food over white-tablecloth service. Whether you are grabbing a loco moco topped with that distinct savory brown gravy or a kalua pork plate, you are getting a direct window into the everyday dining habits of Oahu’s south shore.

Mediocre food for high prices. Charged me $1.80 for a side order of katsu sauce “2oz” after I just paid $20 for a chicken Katsu Plate Lunch. Local spot if you’re just looking to get stuffed with food and fall asleep after. I’d recommend for someone who is just purely hungry. Loco Moco drive in is better

I have been going to the Kahala location and loved their teri chicken. Things have changed. They now serve the worse teri chicken ever! The chicken is way, way over cooked! The chicken is dry, tough, texture like beef Jerky and with very little teri sauce if any. I have mentioned this to the clerk today and expected a better experience, again, as I sit here eating my plate, the chicken is dry, tough, way over cooked or was warmed up to many times, some parts I spat out as it was dry stringy and chewy. It could not be broken down to swallow or I would have choked! I discarded it. No teri sauce at all. Although I live across the street from the Kahala location, I will be going to the Kaimuki, Waialae store. The teri chicken is very tender; juicy, tasty and they put teri sauce on the meat. Totally inconsistent to what L & L 's is known for. I must mention that I'm handicapped.

The service was very pleasant, the cashier taking orders has a great atmosphere about herself. Let me tell you the steak and rice with garlic shrimp added was bomb !

Very disappointed with L&L Kahala. Ordered a mini Garlic Ahi-no rice or mac salad all french fries. Paid $12.95 +1.00 extra for fries (which I wasn't told)= $14.61. The garlic was undercooked and only a small piece of ahi. I get it that fish is high now but really....to charge me extra for fries🤦♀️.
