Kozo Sushi (4618 Kilauea Ave.)
About
A Waialae-Kahala Staple for Quick Sushi
Located right in the heart of the Waialae-Kahala neighborhood, Kozo Sushi has become a reliable go-to for locals seeking affordable, convenient Japanese bites. This spot is defined by its no-frills, grab-and-go efficiency, making it a perfect solution for a quick beach lunch or a stress-free dinner after commuting through Honolulu.
The Signature Hand-Roll Experience
The menu is packed with a vast variety of maki and temaki. The spicy tuna and the signature 'Spicy Ahi' rolls remain the primary draw, consistently providing that satisfying kick of heat paired with cool, vinegared rice. You’ll notice the distinct scent of toasted nori hitting the air the moment you walk through the door—it is the signature aroma of this compact shop. Fans of their menu often gravitate toward the 'Negi-Hama' or the crispy chicken-based rolls, which bridge the gap between traditional sushi ingredients and local Hawaii comfort cravings.
Navigating Your Visit
The shop operates with a brisk, functional energy. Don't expect a dining room; this is strictly takeout territory. One minor quirk to keep in mind is the parking situation in the Kilauea Avenue plaza, which can get congested during the midday rush as locals swing by for their favorite combos. If you are picking up an order during the peak lunch hour, patience is a virtue, but the efficient staff keeps the line moving steadily. Whether you are grabbing a platter for a gathering or a single roll for yourself, this Honolulu outpost focuses on the simple, honest delivery of fast-casual Japanese flavors.

Chicken was decent but was underdressed, didn’t get my soda as ordered, the sushi was basically inedible due to the fact of not tasting fresh or well made. Otherwise, food was ok but wouldn’t order from here again.

Spent $30 on two spicy ahi don, requested the tempura flakes. Instead got barbecue chips crushed up. Rice was too vinegary, ended up tasting like vinegar in every bite.

They’re quick to prep food. The bowls are decent. However, don’t even bother with their nigiri. Look how thin my tamago is. I took a photo because I had to share this with others. And that photo is exactly how my nigiri was presented to me, with the egg already fallen off. This was definitely not worth the price and actually upset me. And the side of ginger that came with my bowl smelled like a poorly-dried wet rag. Truly not appetizing and therefore will not return.

The sweet chili chicken bento had it all, the main dish, green salad, rice, kappamaki, inarizushi and even a couple of gyoza on the side. It was at a reasonable price.

Last time I came here had more quantity in fish 🐟, I just ordered from here the deluxe spicy ahi Don thinking I'll get the same quantity I had yesterday and the day before and last week and so many times before that. WHY NOW YOU GIVE ME SO LITTLE QUANTITY! WHAT I SPENT ISNT WORTH THIS 1 SCOOP OF RIDICULOUS QUANTITY 😒. PICTURES PROVIDED FOR LITTLE QUANTITY! Plus it's poorly made! YES I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE! THIS ISNT DELUXE! THIS IS A REGULAR SMALL DISH! THERES MORE RICE THEN FISH 🐟.

I love Kozo Sushi. The food was great, and the service was fast. The only downside for this location is that there were no chairs or tables to enjoy our lunch; it was takeout orders only.

Presentation of the sushi was awesome, but that was it. We ordered the maile sushi which had good variety, but the taste was okay at best. The fish was cut very sloppily after a closer look, tasted better without the fish and the rice was a bit bitter. Sushi doesn't have seasonings, but this needed something to help with the flavor. We may have just gotten a bad dish, but it was terrible and we ended up throwing about a third out. Would not recommend

Definitely quantity, not quality. Ask my wife, she can't tell the difference. I'm a picky eater, which this lacked flavor and sustenance, due to the meat/veggie to rice ratio overly favoring rice. The one item I did think was great was the Unagi sashimi. Their "Wasabi" was tasteless and had zero kick to it. That's a big deal for me. I need it to destroy my nasal cavity. Customer service was good. I was treated nicely and the food was ready on time. Depending on the type of person you are will dictate if this food will suffice. My wife would return, I wouldn't.
