Island Flavor in the Heart of Waikiki

Walking into Kono’s Northshore on Kapahulu Avenue, you are immediately hit with the savory, smoky aroma of 12-hour slow-roasted kalua pork. This is not a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a counter-service hub where the vibe is strictly North Shore laid-back, transplanted directly into the bustling energy of Honolulu.

The Kalua Pork Standard

The menu centers on the legendary pork, which stays moist and tender because it is braised in its own juices for half a day. Their signature dish, the Old School Kalua Pork Plate, paired with steamed rice and a crisp coleslaw, is the ultimate refuel after a morning spent surfing or exploring the nearby Diamond Head trails. If you are looking for something handheld, the breakfast bombs—massive flour tortillas stuffed with eggs, cheese, and that signature shredded pork—are a local favorite that will easily carry you through the day.

A Local Hangout Experience

Expect a compact, bustling environment where the line often spills toward the door during the lunch rush. It’s loud, efficient, and unabashedly focused on delivering heavy, satisfying portions. Seating is limited and minimalist, making this an ideal spot for those who prefer to grab their meal and head straight to the beach rather than lingering in a formal dining room. While parking in this pocket of the city can be a challenge, the payoff is a meal that captures the authentic, unrefined spirit of Hawaiian comfort food. Whether you’re a local grabbing a quick bite or a visitor craving an honest, no-frills pork dish, this spot delivers exactly what the sign promises.

🍽️ BBQ Pork Bomber (includes side of chips), free Dole whip sample 💵 approx. $16 Fantastic flavours in the kalua pork and guava BBQ sauce, not too heavy for breakfast/brunch. Great location, kind staff (they occasionally pass out Dole whip samples). For first time diners, would definitely recommend items containing the kalua pork. Note: Closest available seating are picnic tables in the communal area, typically open for 1-2 diners but can be difficult to find seating for larger parties.

So fresh and flavorful! We ate here twice during our vacation as it was so yummy the first time we just had to come back. Huge portions and such great flavor. The food just made me feel happy and healthy. We had the Pig on grass, Kalua nachos, and Avocado veggie wrap, and they were all large portions. Also tried some of the Bomber burritos and Turkey Avocado melt and they were a little smaller in size. No dine-in option but they share some outside tables with other businesses in the area. Definitely recommend a visit to Konos!

Me and my partner was really excited about trying this place because we heard great stuff, but we were soo disappointed with the food, portion and taste. This is more specific to the $16 Hawaiian rice bowl, which was outright awful. Not only was the bowl different from the picture, it looks awfully small for $16 , the rice was soggy, the cabbage was leaking lots of water, the meat was dry and hard, and the sauce they gave me was half-filled. The food they gave me was just rude and like a slap in the face. Just comparing the picture, this is a scam. I don’t know if it was a bad day or not but this needs to change. It’s unacceptable and even left me and my partner having a bad day as we argued a bit about it. However, I did speak my concerns to the lady working there and she offered to bin it and give me another order instead, so thank you for that. Please delete it off the menu or change it up. I recommend that you order the burrito instead of the rice bowl if u do come here. Don’t make my mistake. Partner here: I recommended this place and it was a mistake…. $17 for a burrito is crazy and it was alright, but the $17 plate of food that gave $5 proportions got me in trouble bruh. Yeah not good tbh.

We got the Pig on Grass and it was delicious. It has a big portion of Kalua pork, a hefty amount of salad greens, tomato, sprouts, and cucumber. It’s one of the larger salads we were able to find in the area for a pretty reasonable price. The papaya seed dressing and guava BBQ were also a nice addition and complimented the pork nicely. The service was friendly and they offer you free samples of Dole Whip while you wait for your order! Seating is in a shared public space in front of the restaurant. It wasn’t too difficult to find a place to sit, but tables are harder to snag.

The food was so good that we came back twice during our 7 day trip. We ordered Chuns breakfast burrito both times and even shared it between two of us because the portions were so generous. Added avocado and jalapenos the second time we ordered and it was 10/10. The staff was lovely and they even gave us a sample of their Dole Whip. Wish they had more seating but it's worth it even if you have to stand to eat.

Konos offers a fantastic fusion breakfast menu featuring a variety of dishes inspired by different culinary traditions, including Asian, Latin American, and Mediterranean flavors. The menu includes options such as spicy miso scrambled eggs, chorizo breakfast tacos, and Greek yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit and honey. This experience reminded me to explore local cuisine more often to discover the best among the diverse American resort foods, from seafood omelets to renewed breakfast plates. The staff was prompt and attentive, always quick to offer recommendations or accommodate special requests, and the prices were unbeatable, with most dishes priced under $15. Don't hesitate to try and take your time like looking for it is hard to find on maps.

We ate twice at this Kono’s…both times delicious! The first time we shared the Old School. It is voted the best on the island for a reason!!! And the chips that went with it were just as awesome! The second time we shared the Pork sliders and Big Pig Quesadilla!!! YUM!!! You can finish your meal with a Dole Whip, which is equally amazing! This place did not disappoint!
