Komala Curry House
About
A Taste of India Near Ala Moana
Stepping into Komala Curry House feels like finding a quiet, aromatic escape from the humid Honolulu air. Located just a stone's throw from the bustling Kaka'ako district, this spot focuses on the fundamentals of South Indian vegetarian cuisine. The scent of toasted cumin and turmeric greets you at the door, a sharp contrast to the salty breeze of the nearby Pacific.
The Art of the Dosa
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the paper-thin, crispy dosa. Watching the chefs spread the fermented rice and lentil batter onto the hot iron griddle is a masterclass in precision. Whether you opt for the classic Masala Dosa filled with spiced potatoes or a version drizzled with ghee, the crunch is audible across the small dining room. The accompanying coconut chutney is ground to a perfect, cooling consistency, balancing the subtle heat of their signature sambar.
What to Expect
This isn't a place for white-tablecloth service; it is a functional, no-frills kitchen where the food takes center stage. The lighting is bright, and the decor is sparse, allowing you to focus entirely on the complexity of their spice blends. Be aware that the kitchen operates on a rhythm of its own, so patience is a virtue here, especially during the busy lunch hour when office workers from nearby high-rises file in for a quick bite. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle, but for those seeking authentic, meat-free comfort food in the heart of the city, the effort to reach this local staple is well worth it.

This is a takeaway restaurant, with the most lovely owners who always take the best care of you & your food. The food is scrumptious, and hearty. Myself & coworker frequent Komala's, and we are able to order catering trays for office lunches as well. It's so wonderful having such a nice place so close.

An amazing spot for great South Indian food. They’ve good options for both veg and non veg curries with breads like Parotta, Naan to rice like Lemon Rice, to snack like Samosa. Hygiene well maintained. It’s run by a couple who are very humble. Their menu changes regularly. They have sodas as well. My suggestion for spicy food: Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Masala Medium spice : Veg Kurma, Mushroom Aloo Masala Mild : any coconut based kormas

“Is that enough food for a big girl like you?” Is the question you asked me when I ordered my mini bowl. I wish I hadn’t been in “work” mode, and instead had the reaction you deserved. It is never okay to comment on someone’s body. You have no idea what you might be doing to them internally. Are you too dense to understand WHY a bigger person might be ordering the small option? And that mini bowl of overpriced and lukewarm (hot enough to meet safety standards? Not likely if you recommend I microwave it when I get upstairs) food was not worth the insult. Will not be returning. Will absolutely be telling everyone to expect shaming and less than 16 oz of vegetables and rice for $23.
